Unripe fruits of Litchi chinensis (Gaertn.) Sonn: An overview of its toxicity
Ann Pharm Fr. 2023 Jul 11:S0003-4509(23)00073-1. doi: 10.1016/j.pharma.2023.07.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLitchi (Litchi chinensis) is a widely consumed fruit that has been used in many food and health-promoting products worldwide. Litchi is a good source of nutrients including vitamin and minerals, dietary fibers, proteins, and carbohydrates. Of note, several studies have reported that the constituents of litchi fruits elicit antioxidant properties and help to maintain blood pressure, and reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack. An unclearly explained outbreak occurred in June 2019 in Muzaffarpur (Bihar), India...

The efficacy of dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet on lipid profile: A systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical controlled trials
CONCLUSION: Findings of this meta-analysis showed that following the DASH diet had beneficial effects on serum triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, however, it had no effect on serum total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Based on these results, the DASH diet can be considered a strategy for the prevention and complementary management of dyslipidemia.PMID:37415367 | DOI:10.2174/0929867331666230706102406

Haem Iron Intake Is Associated with Increased Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events, All-Cause Mortality, Congestive Cardiac Failure, and Coronary Revascularisation in Older Men: The Concord Health and Ageing in Men Project
ConclusionHigher haem iron intake was independently associated with increased risks of five-point MACE, four-point MACE excluding all-cause mortality, all-cause mortality, CCF, and coronary revascularisation in older men over 5 years.

Trends in Lipoprotein(a) Testing at the University of Pennsylvania Health Systems from 2012-2021
Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is an independent and causal risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Elevated Lp(a) levels are associated with a higher risk for myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, aortic stenosis, and stroke. Lp(a) levels are primarily genetically driven and minimally impacted by diet and lifestyle, so a single measurement can identify individuals with elevated levels. However, Lp(a) screening has not been widely integrated into clinical practice in the United States.

Sex differences in the association between stroke risk factors and pre-clinical predictors of stroke in the childhood determinants of Adult Health study
CONCLUSIONS: Smoking, SBP and glucose affect carotid structure and function more in women than men with some of this risk due to co-occurring risk factors.PMID:37391336 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2023.06.077

The Ketogenic Diet but not Hydroxycitric Acid Keeps Brain Mitochondria Quality Control and mtDNA Integrity Under Focal Stroke
AbstractMitochondrial dysfunction in the ischemic brain is one of the hallmarks of stroke. Dietary interventions such as the ketogenic diet and hydroxycitric acid supplementation (a caloric restriction mimetic) may potentially protect neurons from mitochondrial damage induced by focal stroke in mice. We showed that in control mice, the ketogenic diet and the hydroxycitric acid did not impact significantly on the mtDNA integrity and expression of genes involved in the maintenance of mitochondrial quality control in the brain, liver, and kidney. The ketogenic diet changed the bacterial composition of the gut microbiome, whic...

A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial to Evaluate the Efficacy of Individualized Homeopathic Medicines in Pre-diabetes
CONCLUSION: IHMs produced significantly better results than placebos in FBS and in DSC-R scores but not in OGTT. Independent replications with larger sample sizes are warranted to substantiate the findings.TRIAL REGISTRATION: CTRI/2019/10/021711.PMID:37364594 | DOI:10.1055/s-0043-1769506
