Unlucky numbers: Fighting murder convictions that rest on shoddy stats
LEIDEN, THE NETHERLANDS— When a Dutch nurse named Lucia de Berk stood trial for serial murder in 2003, statistician Richard Gill was aware of the case. But he saw no reason to stick his nose into it. De Berk was a pediatric nurse at Juliana Children’s Hospital in The Hague. In 2001, after a baby died while she was on duty, a colleague told superiors that De Berk had been present at a suspiciously high number of deaths and resuscitations. Novel 2,6-disubstituted benzofuran-3-one analogues improve cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury via neuroprotective and antioxidative effects
Bioorg Chem. 2023 Jan 8;132:106346. doi: 10.1016/j.bioorg.2023.106346. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere are no highly effective and safe medicines for clinical treatment of ischemic stroke, although the natural product 3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) has been approved in China for mild and moderate ischemic stroke. To discover more potent anti-cerebral ischemic agents and overcome the low stability by phthalide derivatives, benzofuran-3-one was selected as a core moiety and two types of nitric oxide (NO)-donating groups were incorporated into the structure. In this work, a series of 2,6-disubstituted benzofuran-3-one derivativ...

Association of serum calcium levels with clinical severity of ischemic stroke at the time of admission as defined by NIHSS score: A cross-sectional, observational study
CONCLUSION: Serum ionized calcium certainly plays a role in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke by influencing the cycle of cytotoxic events that result in ischemic cell death. This study showed that the severity of ischemic stroke was greater in patients with low serum ionized calcium levels compared to patients with normal serum ionized calcium levels.PMID:36618244 | PMC:PMC9810920 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_1033_22

A Partial Clamp During Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Can be Safely Used When Utilizing the Calcium Score with Computed Tomography For Evaluating The Ascending Aorta
CONCLUSION: A PC does not increase postoperative stroke incidence compared with a CFD, when utilizing calcium score evaluation in OPCAB.PMID:36602388 | DOI:10.1532/hsf.4957
