The therapeutic benefits of intravenously administrated nanoparticles in stroke and age-related neurodegenerative diseases
Curr Pharm Des. 2022 Jun 8. doi: 10.2174/1381612828666220608093639. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe mean global lifetime risk of neurological disorders such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Parkinson's disease (PD) has shown a large effect on economy and society.Researchersare stillstruggling to find effective drugs to treatneurological disordersand drug delivery through the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a major challenge to be overcome. The BBB is a specialized multicellular barrier between the peripheral blood circulation and the neural tissue. Unique and selective features of the BBB allow it to tightly control...

The global burden of disease attributable to ambient fine particulate matter in 204 countries and territories, 1990-2019: A systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2022 May 4;238:113588. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2022.113588. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUnderstanding the spatio-temporal patterns of the disease burden attributable to ambient PM2.5 across the world is essential for the prevention of related diseases, as well as ambient PM2.5 control. Following the framework and methodology of the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) in 2019, the global, regional, and national data on ambient PM2.5-attributable death and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and the age-standardized rates of mortality (ASMR) and disability-adjusted life years (ASDR) were summariz...

Neuronal Death Mechanisms and Therapeutic Strategy in Ischemic Stroke
AbstractIschemic stroke caused by intracranial vascular occlusion has become increasingly prevalent with considerable mortality and disability, which gravely burdens the global economy. Current relatively effective clinical treatments are limited to intravenous alteplase and thrombectomy. Even so, patients still benefit little due to the short therapeutic window and the risk of ischemia/reperfusion injury. It is therefore urgent to figure out the neuronal death mechanisms following ischemic stroke in order to develop new neuroprotective strategies. Regarding the pathogenesis, multiple pathological events trigger the activa...

From Rags to Riches: Power and progress in Abu Dhabi
The Ethiad TowersBy Jan LundiusSTOCKHOLM, Apr 20 2022 (IPS) I recently visited Abu Dhabi and my impressions became intermingled with worries about the war in Ukraine. I also happened to read Livy’s The Early History of Rome, written around the beginning of CE, coming across these lines: The study of history is the best medicine for a sick mind; for in history you have a record of the infinite variety of human experience plainly set out for all to see; and in that record you can find for yourself and your country both examples and warnings; fine things to take as models, base things, rotten through and through, to avoid....

Mortality and morbidity from infectious and non-communicable diseases in Greece during Axis/Nazi military occupation (1941-1944)
In conclusion, we found that the Axis/Nazi military occupation of Greece had considerable health effects on infectious diseases and hemorrhagic stroke mortality. Deaths ostensibly due to infectious diseases (e.g. tuberculosis or malaria), were expedited by the hunger famine of the period under investigation. With regard to the elevated mortality due to hemorrhagic stroke, we believe that the stressful events of occupation and famine have triggered increased psychosocial stress which in turn may have increased the risk of hemorrhagic stroke mortality during the period of Axis/Nazi occupation of Greece.PMID:35350253 | PMC:PM...
