Commonly used antibiotic shows promise for combating Zika infections
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) Recently, National Institutes of Health researchers used a variety of advanced drug screening techniques to test out more than 10,000 compounds in search of a cure. To their surprise, they found that the widely used antibiotic methacycline was effective at preventing brain infections and reducing neurological problems associated with the virus in mice.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on January 31, 2018, that Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald would resign as the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The statement read, “Dr. Fitzgerald owns certain complex financial interests that have imposed a broad recusal limiting her ability to complete all of her duties as the CDC Director. Due to the nature of these financial interests, Dr. Fitzgerald could not divest from them in a definitive time period.”

Cerebral infarction due to Zika virus
We read with great interest the letter by Anne Landais and colleagues entitled, “ZIKA vasculitis: A new cause of stroke in children.” [1] The article presents a case of an acute left middle cerebral artery infarct in an eight-month old boy within a few days of symptomatic Zika infection. He had positive Zika PCR in serum followed a few months later by positive Zika IgG and negative Zika IgM. The authors report this as the first case of cerebral infarction associated with Zika infection, broadening the clinical neurologic spectrum of Zika infection.
