The association of stroke risk factors with the future thickness of carotid atherosclerotic plaques
DISCUSSION: The effect of each predictor on plaque thickness is complicated by interactions with other risk factors, particularly for the left carotid artery. The side of carotid artery involvement should be considered for stroke prevention.PMID:37125820 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2023.2208484

Assessment of rehabilitation following intracerebral hemorrhage in China: findings from the Chinese stroke center alliance
This study showed that the rate of rehabilitation assessment was 74.2%, which is low. Rehabilitation assessment was associated with longer hospital stays and lower mortality. Therefore, patients with acute cerebral haemorrhage should undergo comprehensive and professional rehabilitation assessment.PMID:36126147 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2022.2123174

Anterior circulation large vessel occlusion outcomes in patients transferred from a peripheral primary stroke centre
DISCUSSION: Outcomes depended on stroke severity, age and vessel of occlusion. Prognosis was worse if the occlusion included M1, especially in octogenarians. Mothership and Drip-n-ship strategies should be compared in patients from remote locations stratified by stroke severity and patient age.PMID:34986748 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2021.2024727

Acute and long-term impairments regarding emotional symptoms and quality of life in patients suffering from transient ischemic attack and stroke.
This study follows the hypothesis that TIA patients might exhibit non-physical symptoms affecting individual QoL. Methods: In a prospective single-center observational study, IS patients (n = 73) were compared with TIA patients (n = 24) regarding their neurological deficit, ES and QoL, whereas the latter were evaluated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Short Form 36 Heath Survey (SF-36). Assessments were conducted six times within a one-year follow-up period. Results: Overall, anxiety and depression decreased over time, while anxiety decreased more substantially. TIA patients showed similar le...

Assessment of the manifestations of atrial fibrillation in patients with acute cerebral stroke - a single-center study based on 998 patients.
Discussion: The above data should prompt neurologists, cardiologists and family doctors to try to detect AF as a risk factor for ischemic stroke which worsens patient prognosis, prolongs hospital stay and contributes to increase in mortality, especially when more effective drug treatment is currently possible. Reversed ophthalmic artery flow following ischemic stroke: a possible predictor of outcomes following carotid artery stenting.
This study provides evidence that CAS is a valid and effective treatment option regardless of whether patients exhibited ROAF or not. Patients without ROAF were significantly more likely to have improved mid-term functional outcomes compared to those with ROAF. In the group without ROAF admission, CRP may play a role in predicting subsequent functional outcomes, whereas admission Barthel Index was a predictor of outcome in the ROAF group. Lp-PLA2 as a risk factor of early neurological deterioration in acute ischemic stroke with TOAST type of large arterial atherosclerosis.
Authors: Wang Y, Hu S, Ren L, Lei Z, Lan T, Cai J, Li C Abstract INTRODUCTION: Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is a well-known risk factor of atherosclerotic vascular diseases. Nevertheless, its role in the acute phase of ischemic stroke is still unclear. The aim of this study is to identify the relationship between Lp-PLA2 levels and early neurological deterioration (END) in acute ischemic stroke patients with Trial of Org 10 172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) subtype of large arterial atherosclerosis (LAA). METHODS: We enrolled Chinese patients with first ever acute ischemic stroke admitt...

Predictors of dependence after MCA ischemic stroke submitted to thrombolysis.
DISCUSSION: .Dependence is an important indicator of the efficacy of stroke care. Besides it was not possible to evaluate rehabilitation, this is the first study on predictors of post-stroke dependence that focus exclusively on patients with first-ever MCA IS submitted to IVT. NIHSS, LAA stroke, in-hospital pneumonia and seizures after discharge were associated with dependence after first-ever MCA IS submitted to IVT. PMID: 29125072 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

High nonfasting triglyceride concentrations predict good outcome following acute ischaemic stroke.
DISCUSSION: Higher fasting and nonfasting serum TG concentrations predicted good poststroke outcome independently of other prognostic factors. PMID: 28683603 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Gender disparities and thrombolysis use among patient with first-ever ischemic stroke in Malaysia.
DISCUSSION: First-ever ischemic stroke incidence increased by 24.3 and 11.2% among female and male annually. There were distinct symptoms at hospital presentation between genders. All our patients discharged home regardless of genders. In summary, Malaysian female first-ever ischemic stroke was older, present with severe stroke, greater number of risk factors and poorer functional outcome and 30-day in-hospital mortality compared to male.
