Predictors, timing, causes and cost of 30-day readmission after acute ischemic stroke: insights from a Chinese cohort 2015-2018
CONCLUSIONS: The findings highlight the importance of the readmission of ischemic stroke and corresponding policies and interventions, and our work could provide a potential manage path for the reduction of readmission rate.PMID:35876140 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2022.2105489

The association between White matter microstructure alterations detected by Diffusional kurtosis imaging in Neural circuit and post-stroke depression.
CONCLUSION: Our research indicated that the damage to WM microstructure in the frontal lobe, temporal lobe and the genu of corpus callosum may be related toPSD. DKI explores the microstructural changes of WM in PSD patients and may be an auxiliary diagnostic method for PSD. PMID: 33588692 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Acute and long-term impairments regarding emotional symptoms and quality of life in patients suffering from transient ischemic attack and stroke.
This study follows the hypothesis that TIA patients might exhibit non-physical symptoms affecting individual QoL. Methods: In a prospective single-center observational study, IS patients (n = 73) were compared with TIA patients (n = 24) regarding their neurological deficit, ES and QoL, whereas the latter were evaluated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Short Form 36 Heath Survey (SF-36). Assessments were conducted six times within a one-year follow-up period. Results: Overall, anxiety and depression decreased over time, while anxiety decreased more substantially. TIA patients showed similar le...

Effect of a novel designed intensive patient care program on cognitive impairment, anxiety, depression as well as relapse free survival in acute ischemic stroke patients: a randomized controlled study.
Conclusions: IPCP presents with a positive influence on improving cognitive impairment and decreasing anxiety as well as depression, while a less effect on improving RFS in AIS patients. Abbreviation: IPCP: intensive patient care program; RFS: relapse free survival; AIS: acute ischemic stroke; MRA: magnetic resonance angiography; ITT: intention-to-treat; LOCF: last observation carried forward. Application of functional near-infrared spectroscopy to explore the neural mechanism of transcranial direct current stimulation for post-stroke depression.
DISCUSSION: tDCS may improve the processing of negative emotions and working memory in patients with PSD by enhancing aerobic metabolism in the PFC, thereby improving depressive symptoms. PMID: 31092142 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Exposure to female estrous is beneficial for male mice against transient ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSION: Exposure to female estrous reduces mortality and improves functional recovery in MCAO male mice. The study provides the first evidence to support the importance of female interaction to male stroke rehabilitation. ABBREVIATIONS: GAP-43: growth-associated protein-43; SYP: Synaptophysin; MCAO: middle cerebral artery occlusion; OVXs: ovariectomies; CCA: common carotid artery; ECA: external carotid artery; EFE: estrous female exposure; TTC: 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride; PAGE: polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis; PVDF: polyvinylidene difluoride; ANOVA: analysis of variance; LSD: least significant differenc...

Antidepressant-like effects of paeoniflorin on post-stroke depression in a rat model.
CONCLUSIONS: Observed results suggested that paeoniflorin could ameliorate the symptoms and improve the functional capability of PSD rats, similar to the effect of fluoxetine. ABBREVIATIONS: PSD: post-stroke depression; CUMS: chronic unpredictable mild stress stimulation; MCAO: middle cerebral artery occlusion; OFT: open field test; SPT: sucrose preference test, NDS: neurological deficit score, BBT: beam balance test; BDNF: brain-derived neurotrophic factor protein; p-CREB: phosphorylated Cyclic-AMP responsive element binding protein. Neuroanatomical and electrophysiological recovery in the contralateral intact cortex following transient focal cerebral ischemia in rats.
Discussion Focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion induces time-dependent reduction of dendritic spine density and electrophysiological depression in both the ipsilateral and contralateral cortices and intact brain. This neuroanatomical and electrophysiological evidence suggests that neuroplasticity and functional re-organization in the contralateral cortex is possible following focal cerebral ischemia. Post-stroke depression: different characteristics based on follow-up stage and gender-a cohort perspective study from Mainland China.
CONCLUSION: PSD is common in stroke survivors, and female patients have higher prevalence of PSD. Risk factors for PSD in the acute phase are different from that in the chronic phase of stroke. Female gender is an independent risk factor for PSD in the acute stage of stroke. Smoking, frontal lobe lesion, and living alone are predictive factors for PSD in the chronic stage of stroke. NIHSS score is a risk factor for PSD both in the acute and in the chronic stage of stroke. Further studies are needed to understand the mechanisms underlying the elevated prevalence of PSD in female. Enhanced beneficial effects of mild hypothermia by phenothiazine drugs in stroke therapy.
This study combined mild hypothermia with phenothiazine drugs to enhance its neuroprotective effects, thus potentially avoiding side effects. METHODS: Fifty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were induced with a 2-hour right middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion using an intraluminal filament. Five groups were tested: the stroke group without treatment (anal temperature 37.8-38.3°C), the mild hypothermia group (anal temperature 35.0°C), the drugs group (1 mg/kg chlorpromazine and 1 mg/kg promethazine, anal temperature at 37.8-38.3°C), combination therapy with the mild hypothermia and drugs group and the normal contr...
