Risk of Major Cardiovascular and Neurologic Events with Obstructive Sleep Apnea among Patients with Atrial Fibrillation
ConclusionAmong patients with AF, OSA is an independent risk factor for MACNE and, more specifically, stroke/SE.Graphical Abstract

Transcatheter InterAtrial shunt device for the treatment of heart failure: Rationale and Design of the Pivotal Randomized Trial to REDUCE elevated left atrial pressure in patients with heart failure II (REDUCE LAP-HF II)
ConclusionsREDUCE LAP-HF II is designed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of the IASD device in patients with symptomatic HF with elevated LA pressure and LVEF≥40%.

Associations between β-blocker therapy and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with diabetes and established cardiovascular disease
ConclusionsIn this observational analysis of T2D and ASCVD, baseline β-blocker use was not associated with risks for severe hypoglycemia yet also was not associated with CV risk reduction over 3 years of follow-up, supporting a randomized examination of chronic β-blocker therapy in this patient population. (TECOS ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00790205).

Guideline-directed therapies for comorbidities and clinical outcomes among individuals with atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsIn AF patients, there is underuse of GDT for non-AF comorbidities. The association between GDT use and outcomes was strongest in heart failure and obstructive sleep apnea patients where use of GDT was associated with lower mortality and less AF progression.

Incidence and predictors of atrial fibrillation episodes as detected by implantable loop recorder in patients at risk From the LOOP study
ConclusionA considerable burden of previously unknown AF was detected when long-term monitoring was applied in at-risk patients. Biomarkers were associated with AF incidence and improved prediction of long AF episodes.

Sex-specific Cardiac Phenotype and Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
ConclusionsOur results suggest that sex-specific differences in LV geometry, hyper-contractility and diastolic function, not greater degree of LV myopathy, contribute to a higher, age-independent risk of diastolic HF in women with HCM.Graphical abstract

Premorbid levels of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T and natriuretic peptide and prognosis after incident myocardial infarction
ConclusionsPremorbid levels of hs-cTnT and NT-proBNP assessed on average six years prior to incident MI were associated with adverse outcomes after incident MI. These results further highlight the importance of cardiac health at an earlier stage of life.

Lessons learned about stress and the heart after major earthquakes
Publication date: Available online 6 June 2019Source: American Heart JournalAuthor(s): Robert A. KlonerAbstractThere is evidence that certain stressors can trigger cardiovascular events. Several studies have now demonstrated an increase in major adverse cardiac events associated with natural disasters such as an earthquake. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on earthquakes and cardiovascular events. Reports from 13 major quakes were reported. Earthquakes have been associated with a number of cardiac events including sudden cardiac death, fatal myocardial infarction (MI), myocardial infarction, stress car...

Hospital participation in clinical trials for patients with acute myocardial infarction: Results from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry
ConclusionsHospitals are becoming less likely to engage in clinical trials for patients with MI. Patients admitted to hospitals that participated in clinical trials more often received guideline-adherent care and had better long-term outcomes.

Ticagrelor in patients with heart failure after acute coronary syndromes—Insights from the PLATelet inhibition and patient Outcomes (PLATO) trial
ConclusionsIn patients with ACS, ticagrelor is more efficacious in protecting against new ischemic events and mortality than clopidogrel irrespective of the presence of HF. There is no difference between ticagrelor or clopidogrel treatment in new-onset HF post-ACS.

Predictors of NOAC versus VKA use for stroke prevention in patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation: Results from GARFIELD-AF
ConclusionGARFIELD-AF data highlights marked heterogeneity in stroke prevention strategies globally. Physicians are adopting an individualized approach to stroke prevention where NOACs are favored in patients with a lower stroke risk, but also in the elderly and patients with ACS.

Randomized controlled trial of influenza vaccine in patients with heart failure to reduce adverse vascular events (IVVE): Rationale and design

Neck circumference and cardiovascular outcomes: Insights from the Jackson heart study
ConclusionsIn this large cohort of African American individuals, a larger NC was associated with increased risk for HF hospitalization following adjustment for age and sex, but this risk was not statistically significant after adjusting for other clinical variables. Although NC is not independently associated with increased risk for cardiovascular events, it may offer prognostic information particularly related to HF hospitalization.
