Does the nutritional status of acute stroke patients affect the neurological status in the early post-stroke period?
Authors: Wierzbicki K, Horyniecki M, Mamak D, Szopa M, Buchała J, Stawarz G, Florek S, Adamczyk-Sowa M Abstract According to recent reports, malnutrition may be associated with a worse prognosis in stroke patients. The aim of this study was to determine the nutritional status of stroke patients and its impact on neurological and functional status of patients in the early post-stroke period. Our prospective study included a total of 128 patients admitted to the Stroke Unit. The assessment was made in the patients within the first week after the onset of stroke symptoms. Groups of patients with abnormal body mass in...

Lp-PLA2 as a risk factor of early neurological deterioration in acute ischemic stroke with TOAST type of large arterial atherosclerosis.
Authors: Wang Y, Hu S, Ren L, Lei Z, Lan T, Cai J, Li C Abstract INTRODUCTION: Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is a well-known risk factor of atherosclerotic vascular diseases. Nevertheless, its role in the acute phase of ischemic stroke is still unclear. The aim of this study is to identify the relationship between Lp-PLA2 levels and early neurological deterioration (END) in acute ischemic stroke patients with Trial of Org 10 172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) subtype of large arterial atherosclerosis (LAA). METHODS: We enrolled Chinese patients with first ever acute ischemic stroke admitt...

Association of higher waist circumference with milder stroke severity in acute ischaemic stroke.
DISCUSSION: Higher WC at admission is associated with milder baseline stroke severity among patients with acute ischaemic stroke. ABBREVIATIONS: BMI: body mass index; CE: cardioembolism; CI: confidence interval; LAA: large-artery atherosclerosis; NIHSS: National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale; OR: odds ratio; SAO: small-artery occlusion; WC: waist circumference. Predictors of neurological deterioration during hospitalization: results from the Chinese Intracranial Atherosclerosis (CICAS) Study.
DISCUSSION: Patients with watershed infarcts and MCA or BA stenosis or occlusion should be monitored closely, and various therapeutic strategies should be administered simultaneously to prevent pneumonia during hospitalisation. PMID: 25917464 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association between polyvascular atherosclerosis and estimated glomerular filtration rate in patients with ischaemic stroke: data analysis of the patients in the Chinese National Stroke Registry.
This study evaluated the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in ischemic stroke (IS) patients with polyvascular disease (PolyVD) and analysed the relationship between PolyVD and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in IS patients. METHODS: Data from 9152 consecutive IS patients from the China National Stroke Registry were analysed. PolyVD was defined as patients with IS and coronary artery disease (CAD) and/or peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Chronic kidney disease was defined as eGFR < 60 mL/minute/1.73 m(2).The prevalence of CKD in IS patients with PolyVD was calculated. Logistic regression w...
