The TLR9 Ligand, CpG-ODN, Induces Protection against Cerebral Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury via Activation of PI3K/Akt Signaling Stroke
Conclusion
CpG-ODN significantly reduces cerebral I/R injury via a PI3K/Akt-dependent mechanism. Our data also indicate that CpG-ODN may be useful in the therapy of cerebral I/R injury.

Risk Factors Associated With Cerebrovascular Recurrence in Symptomatic Carotid Disease: A Comparative Study of Carotid Plaque Morphology, Microemboli Assessment and the European Carotid Surgery Trial Risk Model Stroke
Conclusions
The presence of carotid plaque hemorrhage is better associated with recurrent cerebrovascular events in patients with symptomatic severe carotid stenosis than the presence of microembolic signals; combining MES and MRIPH, further improves the association while the ECST risk score was insignificant.

HDL-3 is a Superior Predictor of Carotid Artery Disease in a Case-Control Cohort of 1725 Participants Stroke
Conclusions
This study is the first to contrast the associations of HDL-2 and HDL-3 with CAAD. We found that HDL-3 levels were more predictive of CAAD status than HDL-2, HDL-C, or apolipoprotein A1. In addition, for men, paraoxonase 1 activity improved the overall model prediction for CAAD independently and additively with HDL-3 levels. Further investigation into the molecular mechanisms through which HDL-3 is associated with protection from CAAD is warranted.

Adult Moyamoya Disease in an Urban Center in the United States Is Associated With a High Burden of Watershed Ischemia Stroke
Conclusions
We observed a high burden of ischemia, mostly watershed pattern on neuroimaging in our adult moyamoya disease patients. Long-term monitoring of adult moyamoya disease patients in the United States would be useful to better understand the natural history of this condition.

Impact of Heme and Heme Degradation Products on Vascular Diameter in Mouse Visual Cortex Stroke
Conclusions
We identified individual components of the oxidative bilirubin degradation that led to vasoconstriction of cerebral arterioles. The vasoconstrictive effect of Z-BOX A and Z-BOX B was mediated by BKCa channel activity that might represent a signaling pathway in the occurrence of delayed cerebral vasospasm in subarachnoid hemorrhage patients.

Circulating microRNAs Serve as Novel Biological Markers for Intracranial Aneurysms Stroke
Conclusions
Our data suggest that circulating miRNAs may be novel biological markers that are useful in assessing the likelihood of IA occurrence.

Declining Rates of Fatal and Nonfatal Intracerebral Hemorrhage: Epidemiological Trends in Australia Stroke
Conclusions
Overall and fatal ICH rates have fallen in this large Australian population. Improvements in cardiovascular prevention and acute care may explain declining rates. There was no evidence of an increase in devastated survivors because the longer term mortality of 30-day survivors has not increased over time.

Management of Vascular Risk Factors in the Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy Versus Stenting Trial (CREST) Stroke
Conclusions
Site-based risk-factor control improved significantly in the first 6 months and over the long term in CREST but was often suboptimal. Intensive medical management should be considered for future trials of carotid revascularization.

Traumatic Brain Injury Disrupts Cerebrovascular Tone Through Endothelial Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Expression and Nitric Oxide Gain of Function Stroke
Conclusions
The mechanism of profound cerebral artery vasodilation after TBI is a gain of function in vascular NO production by 60-fold over controls, resulting from upregulation of the inducible isoform of NO synthase in the endothelium.

New York State: Comparison of Treatment Outcomes for Unruptured Cerebral Aneurysms Using an Instrumental Variable Analysis Stroke
Conclusions
Using a comprehensive all-payer cohort of patients in New York State with unruptured cerebral aneurysms, we did not identify an association of treatment method with mortality or 30-day readmission. Clipping was associated with a higher rate of discharge to rehabilitation and longer length of stay.

Thiosulfate Mediates Cytoprotective Effects of Hydrogen Sulfide Against Neuronal Ischemia Stroke
Conclusions
The protective effects of H2S are mediated by thiosulfate that is transported across cell membrane by NaS-2 and exerts antiapoptotic effects via persulfidation of caspase-3. Given the established safety track record, thiosulfate may be therapeutic against ischemic brain injury.

Cardiac Time Intervals Measured by Tissue Doppler Imaging M-mode: Association With Hypertension, Left Ventricular Geometry, and Future Ischemic Cardiovascular Diseases Imaging
Conclusion
The cardiac time intervals identify impaired cardiac function in individuals with hypertension, not only independent of conventional risk factors but also in participants with a normal conventional echocardiographic examination. The IVRT/ET and MPI are independent predictors of future cardiovascular disease especially in participants with known hypertension.

ABCA1-Mediated Cholesterol Efflux Capacity to Cerebrospinal Fluid Is Reduced in Patients With Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease Stroke
Conclusions
In people with MCI and AD, the capacity of CSF to facilitate ABCA1-mediated cholesterol efflux is impaired. This lesser cholesterol efflux in MCI supports a pathophysiological role for ABCA1-mediated cholesterol transport in early neurodegeneration.
