Percutaneous management of acute ischaemic stroke
Learning objectives To understand both the rationale and principles behind percutaneous management of stroke. To be aware of the evidence base for this treatment. To appreciate the current logistical challenges and how they might be overcome. Introduction In principle, the similarity between opening an occluded cerebral artery and an occluded coronary artery, when the perfusion to that organ is acutely compromised, is inescapable: to re-establish antegrade flow as quickly as possible to minimise downstream damage. There are, of course, important differences between an acute myocardial infarction (MI) and an acute ischaemic...

Anticoagulation practices and complications associated with Impella ® support at an advanced cardiac center in the Middle East gulf region
AbstractAnticoagulation during Impella ® support is a challenge due to its complications and inconsistent practice across the globe. This observational, retrospective chart review included all patients with Impella® support at our advanced cardiac center at a quaternary care hospital in the Middle East gulf region. The study was conduc ted over six years (2016–2022), a time period during which manufacturer recommendations for purge solution, anticoagulation protocols as well as Impella® place in therapy and utilization were all evolving. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of different anticoagulation practices and asso...

Association of trajectories of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration with risk of cardiovascular disease: the Kailuan Study
Conclusions Changes in non-HDL-C were significantly associated with subsequent risk of CVD events, and participants with a high-increasing pattern had a higher CVD risk. Long-term monitoring of non-HDL-C could be useful to improve the prediction of CVD risk. Trial registration number ChiCTR-TNC-1100148.

Empowering Stroke Survivors: Understanding The Role of Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation
Stroke is 1 of the leading causes of disability worldwide, with someone having a stroke every 40 seconds in the United-States.1 A stroke can occur by clot that interrupts blood flow in the brain. It can also be caused by a burst of a blood vessel that causes bleeding in the brain. There are also other unknown causes of stroke which occur less frequently. A stroke causes brain cells to die as they no longer receive oxygen and nutrients from the blood. Some of the most common risk factors of stroke are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart diseases, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity.

Effect modification of age and hypertension on cancer and prevalence of self ‐reported stroke – A cross‐sectional study
The objective of this study was to examine the effect modification of age on the relationship between cancer and prevalence of self-reported stroke. We used cross-sectional data from the 2015 –2016 iteration of the Canadian Community Health Survey. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to assess the association between cancer and self-reported stroke. Covariates were assessed for effect modification using the maximum likelihood estimation method. We analyzed 86,809 subject s; the prevalence of self-reported stroke was 1.11%. The odds ratio for the association between cancer and self-reported stroke was 1.26 ...

Women's reproductive traits and cerebral small-vessel disease: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSION: Our findings do not convincingly support a causal effect of women's reproductive factors on CSVD. Future studies are warranted to investigate specific estrogen-related physiological changes in women, which may inform current researchers on the causal mechanisms involved in cerebral small-vessel disease progression.PMID:37064189 | PMC:PMC10098092 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2023.1064081

Respiratory training combined with core training improves lower limb function in patients with ischemic stroke
CONCLUSION: Breathing training combined with core muscle training can effectively improve lower limb function and daily living activities in stroke patients. In addition, duration of education, NIHSS score at admission and rehabilitation program were identified as independent risk factors affecting the life quality of stroke patients.PMID:37056859 | PMC:PMC10086917
