Role of Vitamins in Cardiovascular Health: Know Your Facts - Part 1
Curr Vasc Pharmacol. 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.2174/1570161121666230912155548. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular (CV) disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality world-wide, thus it is important to adopt preventive interventions. Observational data demonstrating CV benefits of vitamin supplements, advanced by self-proclaimed experts have resulted in ~50% of Americans reporting the use of multivitamins for health promotion; this practice has led to a multi-billion-dollar business of the multivitamin-industry. However, the data on the extensive use of multivitamins show no consistent benefit for CVD preve...

Role of Vitamins in Cardiovascular Health: Know Your Facts-Part 2
Curr Vasc Pharmacol. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.2174/1570161121666230911115725. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity/mortality world-wide, hence preventive interventions are crucial. Observational data showing beneficial CV-effects of vitamin supplements, promoted by self-proclaimed experts, have led to ~50% of Americans using multivitamins; this practice has culminated into a multi-billion-dollar business. However, robust evidence is lacking, and certain vitamins might incur harm. This two-part review focuses on the attributes or concerns about specific vitamin consumption on ...

One Pill for Everyone? Twenty Years of Polypill for Cardiovascular Disease
The concept of the polypill was first proposed in 2003 as a strategy to reduce cardiovascular risk by combining multiple therapeutic agents into a single daily pill. Wald and Law estimated that a combination of a statin, thiazide diuretic, β blocker, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, folic acid, and aspirin could reduce ischemic heart disease events and stroke by 88% and 80%, respectively.1 Because rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) remain high worldwide, the polypill or fixed dose combination strategy is viewed as a potential method to reduce barriers to adequate medical care.

Prevalence and predictors of low folate levels among stroke survivors in a country without mandatory folate food fortification: Analysis of a Ghanaian sample
Vitamin supplementation with folic acid (FA) reduces hyperhomocysteinemia (Hcy), a vascular risk factor with a strong, graded, and independent association with stroke and other vascular diseases.1 Available data suggest that a 25% reduction in total plasma homocysteine level is accompanied by a 19% lower stroke risk.1,2 Evidence from clinical trials on the effect of folate supplementation on mitigation of stroke risk has however been conflicting. A synthesis of clinical trial data has shown that supplemental FA had a neutral effect on reducing vascular events in countries with a mandate for folate fortification of food, fo...

Case report: Young-onset large vessel ischemic stroke due to hyperhomocysteinemia associated with the C677T polymorphism on 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase and multi-vitamin deficiency
Hyperhomocysteinemia is an important risk factor for cerebral infarction. Herein, we report on a 30-year-old man previously diagnosed with epilepsy who presented with right hemiplegia and total aphasia. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a fronto-temporal ischemic lesion due to occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery. Clinical testing and imaging demonstrated that he had hyperhomocysteinemia induced by multiple factors including the C677T polymorphism on 5.10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), and multiple vitamin deficiencies. The C677T polymorphism on MTHFR is closely related to hyperhomocysteinemia and fol...

Effect of folic acid supplementation on the change of plasma < em > S < /em > -adenosylhomocysteine level in Chinese hypertensive patients: a randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial
In conclusion, supplementation of 2.4 mg/day folic acid can lead to increased SAH levels, especially in MTHFR C677T genotype CT and TT.PMID:36447492 | PMC:PMC9701592 | DOI:10.3164/jcbn.22-13
