Deep brain stimulation for movement disorders after stroke: a systematic review of the literature
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first systematic review of DBS for poststroke movement disorders. Overall, most studies to date have been case reports and small series reporting heterogeneous patients and surgical strategies. This review suggests that DBS for movement disorders after a stroke has the potential to be effective and safe for diverse patients, and DBS may be a feasible option to improve function even years after a stroke.PMID:36308482 | DOI:10.3171/2022.8.JNS221334

Methods and early recruitment of the Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi —Post-acute Care (BASIC-PAC) Project
Mexican Americans (MAs) are the most numerous sub-group of Latinx, the largest minority population in the United States. This important sub-group is aging and growing rapidly. Stroke incidence is similar in MAs compared with non-Hispanic whites (NHWs),1 and MA stroke survivors have worse neurologic, functional, cognitive and quality of life outcomes at 90-days post-stroke compared with NHWs for reasons that are not completely understood.2 Worse stroke outcomes in MAs are not fully explained by socio-demographics, including education and insurance, stroke treatment, stroke severity or subtype, or pre-stroke factors.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, with someone having a stroke every 40 seconds in the United-States[1]. A stroke can occur by clot that interrupts blood flow in the brain. It can also be caused by a burst of a blood vessel that causes bleeding in the brain. There are also other unknown causes of stroke which occur less frequently. A stroke causes brain cells to die as they no longer receive oxygen and nutrients from the blood. Some of the most common risk factors of stroke are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart diseases, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity[2].

In-hospital stroke and mortality trends after left ventricular assist device implantation in the United States from 2017 to 2019
CONCLUSIONS: Our study found a significant downtrend in the in-hospital mortality rates among patients with LVAD without substantial changes in stroke rate trends over the study timeframe. As stroke rates remained steady, we hypothesize that improved management along with better control of blood pressure, could have played an important role in survival benefit over the study time frame.PMID:37387231 | DOI:10.1177/03913988231183723
