Patient-Led Mass Screening for Atrial Fibrillation in the Older Population Using Handheld Electrocardiographic Devices Integrated With a Clinician-Coordinated Remote Central Monitoring System: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial and Process Evaluation
CONCLUSIONS: By incorporating an integrated health care approach involving patient empowerment, centralized clinician-coordinated ECG monitoring, and facilitation of primary care and specialist services, it is possible to diagnose and treat AF early to reduce stroke risk. This study will provide new information on how to implement AF screening using digital health technology practicably and feasibly for older and frail populations residing in the community.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry ACTRN12621000184875; https://www.anzctr.org.au/Trial/Registration/TrialReview.aspx?id=380877.INTERNAT...

Accuracy of the Australian National Sub-Acute and Non-Acute Patient Classification in predicting rehabilitation length of stay for stroke survivors who are ≥65 years of age and have lateropulsion
CONCLUSIONS: Inclusion of a measure of poststroke lateropulsion in the AN-SNAP classification model would result in more accurate LOS predictions to inform funding. Costs of longer rehabilitation LOS may be countered by optimized long-term physical function, reducing requirement for ongoing care.PMID:35068380 | DOI:10.1080/10749357.2021.2008594

Psychometric properties of the EQ-5D-3L in South Australia: a multi-method non-preference-based validation study
This study aims to psychometrically validate the EQ-5D-3L in a large population sample in Australia for the first time.METHODS: The EQ-5D-3L was included in the Dental Care and Oral Health study (DCOHS), conducted in a South Australian population sample. The participants were 23-91 years old, and 44.1% were male. The EQ-5D-3L was responded to on a three-point rating scale ("none"/"no", "some" and "extremely"/"unable"/"confined"). We employed the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) to evaluate whether the EQ-5D-3L total score could identify participants with diagnosed diseases and mental health di...

The economic burden of stroke: a systematic review of cost of illness studies
J Med Life. 2021 Sep-Oct;14(5):606-619. doi: 10.25122/jml-2021-0361.ABSTRACTStroke is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. As the number of stroke cases is rising from one year to another, policymakers require data on the amount spent on stroke to enforce better financing policies for prevention, hospital care, outpatient rehabilitation services and social services. We aimed to systematically assess the economic burden of stroke at global level. Cost of stroke studies were retrieved from five databases. We retrieved the average cost per patient, where specified, or estimated it using a top-down a...
