Lipoprotein(a) levels in a global population with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
CONCLUSIONS: Globally, Lp(a) is measured in a small minority of patients with ASCVD and is highest in black, younger and female patients. More than 25% of patients had levels exceeding the established threshold for increased cardiovascular risk, approximately 50 mg/dL or 125 nmol/L.PMID:36252994 | DOI:10.1136/openhrt-2022-002060

Living with stroke during the first year after onset: an instrumental case study exploring the processes that influence adjustment
CONCLUSIONS: Adjustment to stroke necessitated a reconceptualization of self. Relationships and interactions with others emerged as potential facilitators. For health professionals working with people after stroke, knowledge of the adjustment process and attention to practices that affirm personhood and enhance self-efficacy have the potential to facilitate long term outcomes. Processes linked to adjustment are represented visually to guide conceptual understandings and facilitative actions.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONAll interactions with health professionals, including casual or ad hoc interactions, have the potential...

Inflation Phobia Hastens Recessions, Debt Crises
By Anis Chowdhury and Jomo Kwame SundaramSYDNEY and KUALA LUMPUR, Sep 27 2022 (IPS) Inflation phobia among central banks (CBs) is dragging economies into recession and debt crises. Their dogmatic beliefs prevent them from doing right. Instead, they take their cues from Washington: the US Fed, Treasury and Bretton Woods institutions (BWIs). Costly recessions Both BWIs – the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank – have recently raised the alarm about the likely dire consequences of the ensuing contractionary ‘race to the bottom’. But their dogmas stop them from being pragmatic. Hence, their policy analys...

Psychometric properties of performance-based measures of physical function administered via telehealth among people with chronic conditions: A systematic review
ConclusionsSeveral performance-based measures of physical function across the domains of exercise capacity, strength, balance and general functional capacity may have sufficient reliability and criterion validity when administered via telehealth. However, the evidence is of low-very low quality, reflecting the small number of studies conducted and the small sample sizes included in the studies. Future research is needed to explore the measurement error, responsiveness, interpretability and feasibility of these measures administered via telehealth.

Stroke Epidemiology and Incidence in Regional Queensland: Findings of the Regional Queensland Stroke (REQUEST) Study
CONCLUSIONS: Incidence of stroke in a regional Queensland population is similar to other regional populations and when compared with larger cities. Despite a global trend in stroke reduction, modifiable risk factors like hypertension and atrial arrhythmias continue to be over-represented in the stroke population. All-cause mortality after stroke is high especially during the initial period. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.PMID:36001407 | DOI:10.1111/imj.15917

Spatiotemporal analysis of regional TIA trends
ConclusionOur finding suggests a statically significant spatial component to TIA rate over regional areas but no temporal changes or yearly trends. We propose that such exploratory method should be followed by evaluation of reasons for regional variations and which in turn can identify opportunities in primary prevention of stroke, and stroke care.

COVID-19 Can Increase Risk of Psychiatric Disorders for Up to Two Years
The increased risk of depression and anxiety that patients experience after developing COVID-19 typically subsides within two months, according to astudy published yesterday inThe Lancet Psychiatry. However, patients may have an elevated risk for developing other psychiatric and neurological conditions, such as psychosis, brain fog, and seizures, for up to two years after their infections.“The results have important implications for patients and health services as it suggests new cases of neurological conditions linked to COVID-19 infection are likely to occur for a considerable time after the pandemic has subsided,” s...

Prevalence of atrial fibrillation in a regional Victoria setting, findings from the crossroads studies (2001-2003 and  2016-2018)
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of AF among community-based participants in regional Victoria was similar to predominantly metropolitan-based studies, and was unchanged over time despite increased rates of risk factors. Electrocardiogram rhythm strip investigation was successfully utilised, and particularly benefited from physician overview.PMID:35938603 | DOI:10.1111/ajr.12914
