Sex ‐Differences in Post‐Discharge Outcomes Among Patients Hospitalized for Atrial Fibrillation
ConclusionsHospitalization for AF is common and frequently associated with both in ‐hospital complications and re‐admission, which were more commonly observed among women with AF. Further research into epidemiological factors and treatment differences between men and women with AF is warranted.

Stroke prevention strategies in North American patients with atrial fibrillation: the GLORIA ‐AF registry program
ConclusionsIn GLORIA‐AF, 20% of the population comprising males with CHA2DS2‐VASc ≥1 and females with CHA2DS2‐VASc ≥2 did not receive oral anticoagulation therapy. Patient characteristics associated with a lower likelihood of OAC prescription were use of antiplatelet drugs, paroxysmal pattern of AF, a history of falls, and prior bleeding.

Outcome of octogenarians with atrial fibrillation undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention: insights from the AFCAS registry
ConclusionsIn real‐world patients with AF undergoing PCI, patients aged ≥80 years had higher incidence of MACCE at 12‐month follow‐up compared with younger patients, although they received comparable antithrombotic treatment. The rates of bleeding events were similar.

Efficacy and safety of rivaroxaban compared with warfarin in patients with carotid artery disease and nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: Insights from the ROCKET AF trial
ConclusionsPatients with CD in ROCKET AF had similar risk of stroke/SE compared with patients without CD. Additionally, there was no interaction between CD and the treatment effect of rivaroxaban or warfarin for stroke prevention or safety endpoints.

Incidence of thromboembolic and bleeding events in patients with newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: An Asian multicenter retrospective cohort study in Singapore
ConclusionsSAPT and DAPT are less effective than warfarin in NVAF patients. DOACs may be considered in view of lower risk of overall bleed.

Real ‐world incidence of efficacy and safety outcomes in patients on direct oral anticoagulants with left ventricular systolic dysfunction at a tertiary referral center
ConclusionsOur findings are largely compatible with the results of LVSD or HF subgroups in RE‐LY, ROCKET‐AF, and ARISTOTLE trials and add to increasing confidence that DOACs can be safely used for stroke and systemic embolism prevention in patients with LVSD.

Left atrial appendage occlusion for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a commonly sustained atrial arrhythmia with associated morbidity and mortality. AF is associated with increased risk of thromboembolism and stroke, requiring use of anticoagulation. Anticoagulation decreases the risk of stroke but is associated with a higher risk of bleeding, necessitating discontinuation in some patients. The left atrial appendage is the likely source of thrombus in the majority of patients with AF. This has led to the development of left atrial appendage occlusion as a means to reduce stroke risk in patients who have a contraindication to long‐term anticoagulation. Multiple ...

Vitamin K antagonists with or without long ‐term antiplatelet therapy in outpatients with stable coronary artery disease and atrial fibrillation: Association with ischemic and bleeding events
ConclusionsIn this observational analysis, the use of APT in addition to OAC in patients with stable CAD and AF was not associated with lower risk of ischemic events but possibly with higher bleeding rates. Randomized trials are necessary to determine the optimal long‐term antithrombotic strategy.

Relative efficacy and safety of ticagelor vs clopidogrel as a function of time to invasive management in non –ST‐segment elevation acute coronary syndrome in the PLATO trial
ConclusionsThe benefit of ticagrelor over clopidogrel was consistent in those undergoing early and late angiography, supporting upstream use of ticagrelor.

Cost ‐effectiveness analysis of 30‐month vs 12‐month dual antiplatelet therapy with clopidogrel and aspirin after drug‐eluting stents in patients with acute coronary syndrome
Continuation of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) beyond 1 year reduces late stent thrombosis and ischemic events after drug‐eluting stents (DES) but increases risk of bleeding. We hypothesized that extending DAPT from 12 months to 30 months in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) after DES is cost‐effective. A lifelong decision‐analytic model was designed to simulate 2 antiplatelet strategies in event‐free ACS patients who had completed 12‐month DAPT after DES: aspirin monotherapy (75–162 mg daily) and continuation of DAPT (clopidogrel 75 mg daily plus aspirin 75–162 mg daily) for 18 months. Clinical e...

Oral anticoagulation management in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing cardiac implantable electronic device implantation
ConclusionsManagement of anticoagulation among AF patients undergoing CIED implantation is highly variable, with OAC being interrupted in more than half of both warfarin‐ and NOAC‐treated patients. Bleeding and stroke events were infrequent in both warfarin and NOAC‐treated patients.

Procedural success and intra ‐hospital outcome related to left atrial appendage morphology in patients that receive an interventional left atrial appendage closure
ConclusionsIrrespective of the varying morphological presentation of the LAA, the procedural success rates, interventional characteristics, and safety events did not significantly differ among patients receiving an interventional LAA closure.

Thromboembolic risk and effect of oral anticoagulation according to atrial fibrillation patterns: A systematic review and meta ‐analysis
The objectives of the meta‐analysis were to investigate different impact on outcomes of pxAF and non‐pxAF, with and without OAC. Two reviewers searched for prospective studies on risk of stroke and systemic embolism (SE) in pxAF and non‐pxAF, with and without OAC. Quality of evidence was assessed according to GRADE approach. Stroke combined with SE was the main outcome. Meta‐regression was performed to evaluate OAC effect on stroke and SE incidence rate. We identified 18 studies. For a total of 239 528 patient‐years of follow‐up. The incidence rate of stroke/SE was 1.6% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.3%‐2...

Intracardiac echocardiography for verification for left atrial appendage thrombus presence detected by transesophageal echocardiography: the ActionICE II study
ConclusionsWith TEE, a false positive of an LAA thrombus may be indicated, especially when a thrombus is described as soft rather than solid. Our study suggests that ICE may be a valuable option for verification of a TEE‐based diagnosis of a thrombus.
