Comparative Safety of BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 Vaccines in a Nationwide Cohort of US Veterans
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The findings of this cohort study suggest that there were few differences in risk of adverse events within 14 days of the first dose of either the BNT162b2 or the mRNA-1273 vaccine and small-magnitude differences within 42 days of the first dose. The 38-week risks of adverse events were low in both vaccine groups, although risks were lower for recipients of the mRNA-1273 vaccine than for recipients of the BNT162b2 vaccine. Although the primary analysis was designed to detect safety events unrelated to SARS-CoV-2 infection, the possibility that these differences may partially be explained by a low...

Safety of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in patients with Behcet's syndrome and familial Mediterranean fever: a cross-sectional comparative study on the effects of M-RNA based and inactivated vaccine
Rheumatol Int. 2022 Apr 4. doi: 10.1007/s00296-022-05119-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMost of the published data relate to classical forms of rheumatic diseases (RD) and information on rare inflammatory disorders such as Behçet's syndrome (BS) and familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is limited. We studied the frequency of side effects and disease flares after COVID-19 vaccination with either Pfizer/BioNTech or Sinovac/CoronaVac in 256 patients with BS, 247 with FMF, and 601 with RD. Telephone interviews were conducted using a questionnaire survey in a cross-sectional design in patients with BS, FMF, and RD followed by ...

With the advent of routine childhood vaccinations, invasive infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae have become rare. We wish to report a case of infective endocarditis caused by H. influenzae that was complicated by meningitis, septic arthritis, and stroke.

FDA goes after California stem cell doc for unapproved breast implant device
The FDA this week sent a warning letter to a Beverly Hills, Calif.-based surgeon for their marketing of an unapproved implantable device, dubbed the Pocket Protector, which the surgeon claims can prevent and treat capsular contracture, or scar tissue tightening, during breast implant procedures. In its letter, the federal watchdog also accuses the surgeon, Dr. Mark Berman, of “significant deviations from the FDA’s quality system requirements and current good manufacturing practices,” including charges related to the sterility of implantable devices. “This is not the first time the FDA has notified D...

FDA Lays the Smackdown on Illegal Stem Cell Clinics
FDA is cracking down on stem cell clinics that market unapproved products and don't meet good manufacturing practice requirements. On behalf of the agency, the Department of Justice filed two complaints in federal court this week seeking permanent injunctions against a Florida-based clinic and a California-based clinic.  “Cell-based regenerative medicine holds significant medical opportunity, but we’ve also seen some bad actors leverage the scientific promise of this field to peddle unapproved treatments that put patients’ health at risk. In some instances, patients have suffered serious and permanent harm after re...

Needs of Internally Displaced Women and Children in Baghdad, Karbala, and Kirkuk, Iraq
Conclusions The vulnerability of this population is great, and the emotional trauma of multiple displacements, kidnapping and deaths from intentional violence is great. While some aid is reaching families, much more is needed. Though Iraq is a middle income country, reaching the IDPs in central Iraq will take much more in international assistance than is currently being received. Unfortunately, at this time of great need, assistance is being cut back throughout the region because of lack of funding.10 The local civil society organizations which have sprung up in many locations to assist IDPs, offer an avenue for targeting ...

Vegetarians have 'poorer quality of life' study claims
Conclusion Despite the media headlines, the results from this Austrian cross sectional survey provide no proof that vegetarians are in poorer health than meat eaters. The study has simply compared a group of people with a “vegetarian” diet with three different groups of people following “carnivorous” diets on a range of different health and lifestyle measures to see if any differences are observed. The study has numerous limitations: The cross sectional study cannot prove cause and effect and that the dietary pattern is responsible for any of these self-reported differences. In fact it is possible the associat...
