Intravenous Thrombolysis in Patients Dependent on the Daily Help of Others Before Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— IVT-treated stroke patients who were dependent on the daily help of others before stroke carry a higher mortality risk than previously independent patients. The risk of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage and the likelihood of poor outcome were not independently influenced by previous dependency. Among survivors, poor outcome was avoided at least as effectively in previously dependent patients. Thus, withholding IVT in previously dependent patients might not be justified.

Ultrasonographic measurements of the metacarpal and talar cartilage thicknesses in hemiplegic patients after stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: We may conclude that metacarpal (but not talar) cartilage is thinner on the paretic side of stroke patients that seems to be less with better motor functioning. PMID: 27159891 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Third European Stroke Science Workshop Special Report
Lake Eibsee, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, November 19 to 21, 2015: The European Stroke Organization convened >120 stroke experts from 27 countries to discuss latest results and hot topics in clinical, translational, and basic stroke research. Since its inception in 2011, the European Stroke Science Workshop has become a cornerstone of European Stroke Organization’s academic activities and major highlight for researchers in the field. Participants include stroke researchers at all career stages who convene for plenary lectures and discussions, thus facilitating crosstalk among researchers from different fields. As in pr...

Clinical Pregenetic Screening for Stroke Monogenic Diseases: Results From Lombardia GENS Registry Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In patients prescreened using a clinical algorithm for monogenic disorders, we identified monogenic causes of events in 7% of patients in comparison to the 1% to 5% prevalence reported in previous series.

Early Rivaroxaban Use After Cardioembolic Stroke May Not Result in Hemorrhagic Transformation: A Prospective Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study Brief Reports
Conclusions— These data support the safety of rivaroxaban initiation ≤14 days of mild–moderate cardioembolic stroke/transient ischemic attack. Magnetic resonance imaging evidence of petechial HT, which is common, does not appear to increase the risk of symptomatic HT.

Uric Acid Therapy Prevents Early Ischemic Stroke Progression Brief Report
Conclusions—UA therapy may prevent EIW after acute stroke in thrombolysed patients. Optimal access of UA to its molecular targets through appropriate collaterals may modify the magnitude of the neuroprotective effect.Clinical Trial Registration—URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. NOR-SASS (Norwegian Sonothrombolysis in Acute Stroke Study) Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—CEST is safe among unselected ischemic stroke patients with or without a visible occlusion on computed tomography angiography and with varying grades of clinical severity. There was, however, statistically no significant clinical effect of sonothrombolysis in this prematurely stopped trial.Clinical Trial Registration—URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Lifestyle Factors and Early Clinical Outcome in Patients With Acute Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Healthy lifestyle was not associated with a lower risk of adverse stroke outcomes, in particularly among men. However, underweight may be a particular concern being associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes among both sexes.

Proportional Motor Recovery After Stroke Brief Report
Conclusions—Recovery of motor impairment in patients with intact CST is proportional to initial impairment and unaffected by previous stroke, type of stroke, or upper-limb therapy dose. Novel interventions that interact with the neurobiological mechanisms of recovery are needed. The generalizability of proportional recovery is such that patients with intracerebral hemorrhage and previous stroke may usefully be included in interventional rehabilitation trials.Clinical Trial Registration—URL: http://www.anzctr.org.au. Temporal Trends in Sex Differences With Regard to Stroke Incidence Clinical Sciences
Background and Purpose—We evaluated temporal trends in stroke incidence between men and women to determine whether changes in the distribution of vascular risk factors have influenced sex differences in stroke epidemiology. Methods—Patients with first-ever stroke including ischemic stroke, spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and undetermined stroke between 1987 and 2012 were identified through the population-based registry of Dijon, France. Incidence rates were calculated for age groups, sex, and stroke subtypes. Sex differences and temporal trends (according to 5-year time periods) were evalu...

Baseline Hemodynamic Impairment and Future Stroke Risk in Adult Idiopathic Moyamoya Phenomenon Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—The risk of new or recurrent stroke was lower than expected. The low event rate, low prevalence of increased OEF, and potential selection bias introduced by revascularization surgery limit strong conclusions about the association of increased OEF and future stroke risk.Clinical Trial Registration—URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov.
