What is the diameter of a fibrin fiber?
CONCLUSION: We performed a systematic, multitechnique survey assessing fibrin fiber diameters under a range of biochemical conditions. The similarity in the diameter values obtained using SEM and superresolution imaging suggests that drying and fixation during SEM sample preparation do not dramatically alter fiber cross-sections. Congruence, under certain conditions, between diameter values obtained using SEM, superresolution fluorescence imaging, and turbidimetry demonstrates the feasibility of a fibrin diameter standardization project.PMID:37601015 | PMC:PMC10439396 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2023.100285

Quantifying the potential effects of air pollution reduction on population health and health expenditure in Taiwan
Environ Pollut. 2023 Aug 17:122405. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2023.122405. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAir pollution, particularly ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution, poses a significant risk to public health, underscoring the importance of comprehending the long-term impact on health burden and expenditure at national and subnational levels. Therefore, this study aims to quantify the disease burden and healthcare expenditure associated with PM2.5 exposure in Taiwan and assess the potential benefits of reducing pollution levels. Using a comparative risk assessment framework that integrates an auto-aggressive i...

Epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in Japan: An overview study
J Cardiol. 2023 Aug 15:S0914-5087(23)00200-9. doi: 10.1016/j.jjcc.2023.08.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVDs), such as heart disease and stroke, have a significant impact on life expectancy, healthy life expectancy, and medical costs in Japan. Each prefecture is currently promoting measures in accordance with the Japanese National Plan for Promotion of Measures Against Cerebrovascular and Cardiovascular Disease, which was established by the government. In recent years, the crude mortality rate of heart disease in Japan has been increasing year by year with the aging population. Meanwhile, the ...

The potential link between acromegaly and risk of acute ischemic stroke in patients with pituitary adenoma: a new perspective
AbstractAcromegaly is an endocrine disorder due to the excess production of growth hormone (GH) from the anterior pituitary gland after closed epiphyseal growth plates. Acromegaly is mainly caused by benign GH-secreting pituitary adenoma. Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is one of the most common cardiovascular complications. It ranks second after ischemic heart disease (IHD) as a cause of disability and death in high-income countries globally. Thus, this review aimed to elucidate the possible link between acromegaly and the development of AIS. The local effects of acromegaly in the development of AIS are related to the develop...
