Demographics and clinical characteristics of patients of prescribing psychologists, psychiatrists, and primary care physicians
Am Psychol. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1037/amp0001352. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo describe the characteristics of patients receiving psychotropic medication from prescribing psychologists, psychiatrists, and primary care physicians. This descriptive study was conducted using private insurance claims of patients from New Mexico and Louisiana receiving psychotropic medications (anticonvulsants, antidepressants, antipsychotics, hypotensive agents, anxiolytics/sedatives/hypnotics, and stimulants) from 2004 to 2021 (N = 307,478). Patient characteristics were captured during the 6 months prior to their first psychotropic medica...

Rapid Metabolism Underlying Subtherapeutic Serum Levels of Atypical Antipsychotics Preceding Clozapine Treatment: A Retrospective Analysis of Real-World Data
ConclusionLCD and associated rapid metabolism of non-clozapine antipsychotics is frequent before starting clozapine treatment. For olanzapine and quetiapine, this is associated with significantly increased risk of having subtherapeutic concentrations. (Source: CNS Drugs)

Morphological heterogeneity of neurons in the human central amygdaloid nucleus
J Neurosci Res. 2024 Apr;102(4):e25319. doi: 10.1002/jnr.25319.ABSTRACTThe central amygdaloid nucleus (CeA) has an ancient phylogenetic development and functions relevant for animal survival. Local cells receive intrinsic amygdaloidal information that codes emotional stimuli of fear, integrate them, and send cortical and subcortical output projections that prompt rapid visceral and social behavior responses. We aimed to describe the morphology of the neurons that compose the human CeA (N = 8 adult men). Cells within CeA coronal borders were identified using the thionine staining and were further analyzed using the "single-...

Simultaneous EEG-fMRI Investigation of Rhythm-Dependent Thalamo-Cortical Circuits Alteration in Schizophrenia
This study aims to provide new insight into network communication in schizophrenia by integrating FC and EEG rhythm information. After collecting simultaneous resting-state EEG-functional magnetic resonance imaging data, the effect of rhythm modulations on FC was explored using what we term "dynamic rhythm information." We also investigated the synergistic relationships among three networks under rhythm modulation conditions, where this relationship presents the coupling between two brain networks with other networks as the center by the rhythm modulation. This study found FC between the thalamus and cortical network regio...

Multimorbidity and the Etiology of Schizophrenia
Curr Psychiatry Rep. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s11920-024-01500-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: A global study of multimorbidity in schizophrenia, especially of the association with physical conditions, might offer much needed etiological insights.RECENT FINDINGS: Our review suggests that life-style factors and medication related to schizophrenia are only part of the explanation of the increase in risk for cardiovascular, metabolic, pulmonary disorders, and some cancers. Positive associations with autoimmune disorders (with the exception of rheumatoid arthritis) and epilepsy are promising avenues of res...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewA global  study of multimorbidity in schizophrenia, especially of the association with physical conditions, might offer much needed etiological insights.Recent FindingsOur review suggests that life-style factors and medication related to schizophrenia are only part of the explanation of the increase in risk for cardiovascular, metabolic, pulmonary disorders, and some cancers. Positive associations with autoimmune disorders (with the exception of rheumatoid arthritis) and epilepsy are promising avenues of research but to date have not been fully exploited. The same holds for the negative comorbidit...

The impact of familial involvement on dropout in a culturally informed group therapy for people diagnosed with 'schizophrenia'
We examined whether familial involvement and other demographic variables predicted dropout among 101 patients enrolled in culturally informed group therapy for schizophrenia (CIGT-S), which incorporates collectivistic principles and spiritual coping into treatment. We reviewed records and conducted follow-up calls to identify reasons for dropout, and performed survival analyses to identify when dropout was likely.RESULTS: Familial involvement was linked to greater engagement with treatment and lower dropout, signifying a mechanism for improving treatment attendance in this group. Ethnic minorities and patients with higher ...

Robert Rosenthal (1933-2024)
Am Psychol. 2024 Apr 15. doi: 10.1037/amp0001356. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRobert Rosenthal died on January 5, 2024, in Riverside, California, at the age of 90. Born March 2, 1933, in Giessen, Germany, just as the Nazis came to power, the young Bob-he always insisted that everyone call him "Bob"-and his family fled in 1939 to Rhodesia (a British African protectorate) before making it to New York and then Los Angeles. Bob's dissertation derived from the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT). It compared projection in paranoid schizophrenic patients versus a normal control group after an experimental manipulation. Bob analyz...

Discovery and in vitro Evaluation of Novel Serotonin 5-HT2A Receptor Ligands Identified Through Virtual Screening
ChemMedChem. 2024 Apr 15:e202400080. doi: 10.1002/cmdc.202400080. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe 5-HT2A receptor is a molecular target of high pharmacological importance. Ligands of this protein, particularly atypical antipsychotics, are useful in the treatment of numerous mental disorders, including schizophrenia and major depressive disorder. Structure-based virtual screening using a 5-HT2A receptor complex was performed to identify novel ligands for the 5-HT2A receptor, serving as potential antidepressants. From the Enamine screening library, containing over 4 million compounds, 48 molecules were selected for subsequ...

Systematic Review on the Relationship between Toxoplasmosis and Mental Disorders
CONCLUSIONS: Due to the limits of the study, no conclusions can be drawn in childhood and adolescence. However, the results of this systematic review show a possible association of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and compulsive disorder with T. gondii infection in adults. There is a need to improve control, integrated surveillance and extend prevention measures to the entire population.PMID:38622004 | DOI:10.62641/aep.v52i2.1658 (Source: Actas Espanolas de Psiquiatria)
