What Are the Common Types of Craniosynostosis?
Discussion Usually when an infant is born the fontanelles and sutures remain open allowing the cranial bones the ability to move and undergo molding. This assists in delivery and molding from delivery usually resolves within hours to a few days. Positional plagiocephaly (also called deformational plagiocephaly) usually occurs after birth (usually in the first few weeks) due to mechanical factors including positioning of the infant’s head such that little repositioning occurs (i.e. bottle feeding only on same side, placement in crib on same side, placement always on infant’s back with no prone placement, etc.)...

When Should a Newborn Infant Start Tummy Time?
Discussion Tummy time (TT) is one of a newborn’s and young infant’s major physical activities. TT is when an infant is placed awake on a firm surface (such as a floor) in a prone position while supervised by an adult. This encourages the infant to elevate their head and push up with arms to elevate their upper torso. TT is encouraged to be done in short amounts of time several times a day and to increase the amount of time in this supervised position up to 30 minutes total per day. TT has been associated with gross motor movement and development and is a component of the World Health Organization’s and se...

How Common Are Brain Tumors Seen in Spasmus Nutans?
Discussion Nystagmus is periodic eye movement that is involuntary where there is a slow drift of fixation. The slow drift can be followed by a fast saccade back to fixation. The pathological movement is the slow phase, but nystagmus is described by the fast phase (i.e. horizontal nystagmus, vertical nystagmus). Spasmus nutans (SN) is a movement disorder that is rare. The classic triad includes nystagmus, head bobbing or titubation, and torticollis, with these problems being in the absence of any ophthalmological or neurological condition. Onset is in the first year of life but ranges from 6-36 months. Time to resolution ...

Sudden infant death advice 'being ignored' due to flat head worries
Conclusion The success of the campaign to reduce the devastating experience of SIDS is not in doubt. Since the Back To Sleep campaign began, numbers of these "cot deaths" have reduced by 65%  in the UK. And, at time of writing, recorded deaths from SIDS are at a record low in England and Wales. Still, there is no room for complacency. Safe sleeping advice remains important and parents should take it very seriously. There's no research to show whether cushions or pillows marketed as suitable for preventing flat head are either safe or effective. They are best avoided. There are some things to bear in mind about ...
