The Black Box of Patient Education: An Expert Consultation on Patient Education Interventions and Strategies for the Management of Subacromial Pain Syndrome
CONCLUSION: The consultation confirmed and expanded the knowledge from the literature by adding knowledge that emerged from the experts' practical experience. It resulted in the development of preliminary statements on structured patient education interventions and management strategies for SAPS. These emerging statements are, to our knowledge, the first to inform patient education specifically as it relates to the management of SAPS taking into account psychosocial and contextual factors.PMID:37736407 | PMC:PMC10510546 | DOI:10.3138/ptc-2022-0123

Risk Stratification in a Tertiary Care Spine Centre: Comparison Between STarTBack and OSPRO-YF Screening Tools
CONCLUSIONS: STarTBack and OSPRO-YF are short screening tools with acceptable convergent and known-group construct validity and no floor or ceiling effect of their total score. Both tools could assist with the identification, evaluation, and management of psychological distress in patients presenting to tertiary care spine centres.PMID:37736380 | PMC:PMC10510560 | DOI:10.3138/ptc-2021-0026

Opioid Prescribing Habits of Emergency Department Providers in Response to an Educational Intervention
CONCLUSION: Overall, the educational intervention on the topic of opioid prescribing guidelines did not have the expected impact on amounts of opioids administered or prescribed during the study period. Total opioids utilized and opioids prescribed did not vary between the pre- and post-intervention groups overall, by subset diagnosis, or by provider. There was, however, an increase in utilization of non-opioid treatments that could be indicative of a partial response to the educational intervention. This study showed that long-term effects of education regarding recommended opioid utilization might be less effective than ...

Patients with fibromyalgia in Finnish healthcare center - one-year follow up
CONCLUSION: With these results, we cannot conclude that ÖMPSQ predicts the patient's severity of symptoms. On the contrary, we can conclude that antidepressants and/or psychological therapy might reduce fibromyalgia symptoms for depressed patients with fibromyalgia. Patients with fibromyalgia might benefit from clinical evaluation and modifications to the treatment plan if necessary.PMID:37738389 | DOI:10.1080/02813432.2023.2259960

Genetic Disorders in Pediatric Rheumatology Clinic: When to Suspect, and Why?
Indian J Pediatr. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1007/s12098-023-04845-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTJust under a decade ago, most children with genetic disorders received a phenotypic diagnosis, often by atlas matching. With advances in genomics (decoding of human genome, easy availability of genetic testing, and reduction in cost of tests), genotypic diagnosis is now a reality. Genetic diseases can lead to non-inflammatory arthritis that can mimic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). A small but growing number (as newer genes are discovered) of genetic diseases are being diagnosed in children with a seemingly inflammatory muscu...

Gender-specific results of the Dresden children and adolescents headache program DreKiP
We examined gender differences in the outpatient multimodal Dresden Child and Adolescent Headache Program DreKiP.METHODS: We treated 140 patients with primary headache in a 15-hour structured group program. At baseline (T0) and six (T1) and twelve months (T2) after the end of the program, data on headache-related limitation of daily activities (PedMIDAS) as well as headache frequency, intensity, and pain-related disability (P-PDI) were collected. Retrospectively, these data were analyzed separately for girls and boys.RESULTS: For 91 patients (9-19 years, median = 15; 71.4 % female) data were available for at least two meas...

Factors Related to Expectations in Individuals Waiting for Total Knee Arthroplasty
CONCLUSIONS: This questionnaire reliably measures patient expectations before TKA; however, further research is needed. Although we anticipated younger age to be related to higher expectations, higher function prior to TKA appears to be more strongly associated with higher expectations.PMID:37736415 | PMC:PMC10510534 | DOI:10.3138/ptc-2020-0141

A Visual Analog Scale for Self-Reported Quality of Life: A Comparison of VAS and QoL-AD in Older Adults
CONCLUSIONS: Results indicated strong construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability of the VAS QoL-AD in people without dementia. These results warrant further research into the development of a dementia-specific, self-reported VAS QoL scale for PWD.PMID:37738287 | DOI:10.1097/WAD.0000000000000581

Gender, Pain, and Function Associated With Physical Activity After Hospitalization in Persons Living With Dementia
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that managing or reducing pain, encouraging individual functional level, and gender could influence time spent in physical activity after acute hospitalization in persons living with dementia.PMID:37738286 | DOI:10.1097/WAD.0000000000000583
