The Efficacy of Stellate Ganglion Blockade in Herpetic Neuralgia: A Case Report
Cureus. 2023 Aug 20;15(8):e43805. doi: 10.7759/cureus.43805. eCollection 2023 Aug.ABSTRACTThe varicella-zoster virus can reactivate in patients with impaired cell-mediated immunity, resulting in herpes zoster (HZ) and sometimes in herpetic neuralgia (HN). Stellate ganglion blockade (SGB) has been studied for the treatment of HN and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), but its effectiveness in preventing PHN in patients with acute HZ is not well-established. Here, we present a case of a 75-year-old woman who underwent SGB for HN of the right upper limb. The patient had been treated with antivirals and various analgesics, but adver...

CYP2D6 ‐guided opioid therapy for adults with cancer pain: A randomized implementation clinical trial
ConclusionOur study revealed high acceptance of pharmacogenetic testing as part of a clinical trial among patients with cancer pain. However, provider response to genotype-guided recommendations was low, impacting assessment of pain-related outcomes. Addressing barriers to utility of pharmacogenetics results and clinical recommendations will be critical for implementation success.

Opioid prescription and consumption after hospital discharge following laparoscopic bariatric surgery
Background: In the current opioid crisis, patients undergoing bariatric surgery may be at an increased risk of harms related to opioid overconsumption due to impulse control deficits and postoperative changes in drug absorption mechanisms. Therefore, surgeons should minimize these risks while ensuring effective postoperative pain management. Previous studies have addressed patterns of opioid prescribing and consumption in other surgical populations; however, there is a lack of research focused on bariatric surgery.

Reduction of pain after laparoscopic bariatric surgery by personalized checkpoint acupuncture
Background: Optimal pain management after bariatric surgeries remains a challenge in clinical practice. Acupuncture (AC) is known to be effective in postoperative pain management, but clinical efficacy depends on the rationale of AC point selection.

Effect of acupuncture combined with rehabilitation on Postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction after abdominal operation
Background: Postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction is one of the most common complications in patients undergoing abdominal general anesthesia. The incidence of PGD in patients undergoing abdominal surgery is 10% to 30%. PGD patients have a long hospital stay, heavy economic burden, high risk of infection and other complications. Maintaining normal gastrointestinal function is considered an important part of ERAS after abdominal surgery, reducing the pain of surgery, preventing organ dysfunction and complications, and speeding recovery.

A service evaluation of the use of sublingual ketamine for acute postoperative pain following colorectal surgery within an ERAS pathway.
Background: Ketamine, an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist, is increasingly used as a perioperative adjunct to opioid anaesthesia for acute postoperative pain, with the intention of reducing postoperative opioid consumption [1]. There is little published evidence reporting the use of ketamine as a continued adjunct for acute post abdominal surgery pain, despite the additional utility of a sublingual administration route and it exhibiting no adverse effects on gut motility. Within one hospital at our institution, we have developed a sublingual postoperative ketamine protocol for patients recovering from major abdominal...

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS ®) Protocol for Liver Surgery: The impact of epidural catheter placement
Background:Compare the use of intraoperative vasopressors, postoperative mobility and pain between patients with epidural catheter and patients without epidural catheter, but with a strategy of multimodal analgesia, undergoing open liver surgery. We also assessed for differences in the following outcomes: length of stay, fluid therapy, complications rate, postoperative nausea and vomiting and return of bowel function.

Efficacy of Lanreotide for management of patients with chronic small bowel obstruction receiving palliative home Parenteral Nutrition and patients with non-malignant chronic small bowel obstruction receiving home parenteral nutrition
We report our experience of Lanreotide in the management of high output stoma (HOS), abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting in the setting of chronic small bowel obstruction (SBO) of malignant and non-malignant origin in patients receiving home parenteral nutrition (HPN).

Development of a bupivacaine sustained release formulation for non-opioid analgesia following instrumented spinal surgery
Background: Patients undergoing instrumented spine surgery experience severe pain. Current opioid-based pain treatment provides a delicate balance between analgesic effect and side effects, delaying recovery. Local anesthetics such as bupivacaine have the potential to provide non-opioid pain relief, but are hampered by rapid systemic absorption and a duration of action that does not match the duration of severe pain. To enhance recovery after surgery through sustained and precise non-opioid pain treatment, BR-003 was developed.

Laparoscopic transversus abdominis plane block as a lower risk alternative to thoracic epidural anaesthesia in bowel resection – better pain control in the course of time
Background: ERAS concepts try to avoid opiates after surgery with their side effects and poorer postoperative recovery in patients. Therefore, transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block is a good option to reduce opiate consumption in bowel surgery and is a good alternative to thoracic epidural anaesthesia (TEA) which is still often used in abdominal surgery.
