The Efficacy of Stellate Ganglion Blockade in Herpetic Neuralgia: A Case Report
Cureus. 2023 Aug 20;15(8):e43805. doi: 10.7759/cureus.43805. eCollection 2023 Aug.ABSTRACTThe varicella-zoster virus can reactivate in patients with impaired cell-mediated immunity, resulting in herpes zoster (HZ) and sometimes in herpetic neuralgia (HN). Stellate ganglion blockade (SGB) has been studied for the treatment of HN and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), but its effectiveness in preventing PHN in patients with acute HZ is not well-established. Here, we present a case of a 75-year-old woman who underwent SGB for HN of the right upper limb. The patient had been treated with antivirals and various analgesics, but adver...

An unusual cause of abdominal pain in an older woman
We report an elderly woman who was diagnosed as toothpick penetrated the jejunal wall and successfully retrieval under DBE. To our best knowledge, there is currently only one report of removing toothpick from the small intestine using DBE. We figured that DBE is a feasible, safe, and effective treatment when toothpicks penetrate the small intestinal wall without other adverse events based on our presentation.PMID:37732347 | DOI:10.17235/reed.2023.9898/2023

Coexistence of small bowel gastrointestinal stromal tumor, small bowel adenocarcinoma, and ganglioneuroma in a patient with neurofibromatosis type I and caused intussusception
We report a synchronous case of small bowel gastrointestinal stromal tumor, small bowel adenocarcinoma, and ganglioneuroma complicated by intussusception in an old woman with NF-I. The patient presented with a 2-month history of abdominal pain and multiple neurofibromas and café au lait macules was found all over the patient's body. The enhanced computed tomography revealed a terminal ileal tumor which was significantly enhanced with secondary intussusception. The tumor of the ileum was considered to be NF-I-associated intestinal neurofibroma.Postoperative pathology and immunohistochemistry showed that the terminal ileoce...

Catechin hydrate ameliorates cerulein ‑induced chronic pancreatitis via the inactivation of TGF‑β/Smad2 signaling
Mol Med Rep. 2023 Nov;28(5):208. doi: 10.3892/mmr.2023.13095. Epub 2023 Sep 21.ABSTRACTChronic pancreatitis (CP) is a pancreatic inflammatory disease associated with histological changes, including fibrosis, acinar cell loss and immune cell infiltration, and leads to damage of the pancreas, which results in pain, weight loss and loss of pancreas function. Catechin or catechin hydrate (CH) has antioxidant, anticancer and immune‑regulatory effects. However, unlike other catechins, the antifibrotic effects of (+)‑CH have not been widely studied in many diseases, including CP. Therefore, the anti‑fibrotic effects of (+)â...

Improving the quality of care of Canadians waiting for elective surgery: an important health care priority
Can J Surg. 2023 Sep 21;66(5):E474-E475. doi: 10.1503/cjs.015922. Print 2023 Sep-Oct.ABSTRACTSummaryThe backlog of cases on surgical wait lists is a substantial problem for surgical patients, their families, surgeons, health care systems and governments. There are several approaches governments can take to improve the health, well-being and surgical outcomes of waiting patients. First, provinces should consider patient-centred approaches to triaging that reflect pain, symptoms or functional gain, and approaches using multidisciplinary teams or centralized triage. Second, governments could provide prehabilitation and mental...

Anatomical Features of the Tarsal Sinus in Patients with Pes Planus: Implications for Clinical Management
CONCLUSIONS Sinus tarsi morphology may be impacted by pes planus. When treating patients with pes planus, clinicians should take these anatomical factors into consideration since they might more completely characterize the anatomical features of the sinus tarsi.PMID:37731240 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.940687

Synchronous bilateral ovarian torsion followed by recurrent unilateral torsion in a patient undergoing fertility treatment: A case report and literature review
CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should have a low-threshold to investigate and rule out OT in patients who present with lower abdominal pain, especially in those with additional risk factors for torsion. Patients with confirmed torsion can be successfully managed with detorsion of the ovaries. Further research is needed to determine the best management option for patients with recurrent torsion episodes.PMID:37734139 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejogrb.2023.08.015

A systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies on childbirth perineal trauma for the development of a Core Outcome Set
CONCLUSIONS: Among the descriptive themes, psychosocial effects, communication, and recovery exhibited the highest prevalence. The findings of this meta-synthesis may serve as a reporting guideline for future studies investigating the consequences of childbirth perineal trauma, ensuring that women's priorities are accurately reflected in reported outcomes.PMID:37734138 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejogrb.2023.09.010

Phenyl glycosides from < em > Bacopa monnieri < /em > with their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities
This study described the isolation and identification of one new, bacomoside D3 (1), and seven known phenyl glycosides (2 - 8). The structures of isolates were established by analysis of their spectroscopic data or hydrolysis followed by HPLC analysis together with a comparison to those reported in the literature. These compounds were evaluated for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Among them, compounds 4 and 5 exhibited strong DPPH radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 9.77 ± 0.08 and 3.50 ± 0.04 µM, respectively. Compounds 2 and 5 significantly inhibited TNF-α production in LPS-stimulated RAW264...

A cross-sectional study of multidimensional fatigue in biologic-treated rheumatoid arthritis: which variables play a role?
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that effectively addressing fatigue in RA patients requires an individualized approach. This approach should acknowledge the varying degrees of fatigue across different fatigue dimensions (physical or mental), while also taking into account the patient's mental health problems, pain levels, and disability levels.PMID:37731384 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2023.2258333

Differences in strength and fatigue resistance of scapular protractors and retractors between symptomatic and asymptomatic dyskinesis
CONCLUSIONS: Scapular dyskinesis is characterized by weaker scapular protractors and reduced agonist/antagonist ratios, especially when symptomatic. Targeting the scapular protractors for a better balance of scapular musculature in rehabilitation and strengthening programs may improve shoulder symptoms and function, but more interventional studies are required.PMID:37734729 | DOI:10.4085/1062-6050-0092.23

Understanding wheelchair use in older adults from the National Health and Aging Trends Study
CONCLUSIONS: Current wheelchair users reported more physical difficulties and were much less likely to go outside. This lower outdoor mobility could be due to physical difficulties or potential barriers in physical and socio-cultural environments. In addition, older adults who do not use wheelchairs showed increasing physical problems over time (including balance or coordination problems). Clinicians should consider older wheelchair users' health and physical limitations when prescribing wheelchairs.PMID:37734645 | DOI:10.1016/j.apmr.2023.09.006

Digital Health Applications in the Area of Mental Health —a Scoping Review
CONCLUSION: Most of the published studies display a high risk of bias, both because of the manufacturers' participation and because of methodological deficiencies. DiGA are an increasingly important therapeutic modality in psychiatry. The available evidence indicates that treatment effects are indeed present, but prospective comparisons with established treatments are still entirely lacking.PMID:37732500 | DOI:10.3238/arztebl.m2023.0208
