Septal atrial thrombosis as a primary presentation of antiphospholipid syndrome in a patient with ANA-negative systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report
CONCLUSIONS: This case underscores the critical importance of recognizing and managing atrial thrombus, a rare but life-threatening complication in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and antiphospholipid syndrome. Additionally, the diagnostic challenge of ANA-negative SLE warrants careful consideration in patients presenting with characteristic features of the disease.PMID:38576990 | PMC:PMC10990389 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001668 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

A 30-year-old female with dermatomyositis without high elevation of muscle enzymes: a rare case report from Syria
CONCLUSION: Even if test findings are not conclusive, dermatomyositis should always be considered when muscular weakness manifests. It's important to distinguish the disorder from connective tissue diseases like lupus erythematosus. In fact, to correctly diagnose DM, if there are any doubts, a muscle biopsy is required.PMID:38576947 | PMC:PMC10990297 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001682 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Neutrophils display distinct post-translational modifications in response to varied pathological stimuli
Int Immunopharmacol. 2024 Apr 3;132:111950. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2024.111950. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeutrophils play a vital role in the innate immunity by perform effector functions through phagocytosis, degranulation, and forming extracellular traps. However, over-functioning of neutrophils has been associated with sterile inflammation such as Type 2 Diabetes, atherosclerosis, cancer and autoimmune disorders. Neutrophils exhibiting phenotypical and functional heterogeneity in both homeostatic and pathological conditions suggests distinct signaling pathways are activated in disease-specific stimuli and alter neut...

The Contribution of Serum Sialic Acid Binding Immunoglobulin-Like Lectin 1(sSIGLEC-1) as an IFN I Signature Biomarker in the Progression of Atherosclerosis in Egyptian Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) Patients
Indian J Clin Biochem. 2024 Apr;39(2):291-298. doi: 10.1007/s12291-023-01155-y. Epub 2023 Sep 30.ABSTRACTClinical symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), such as atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular diseases, are caused by inflammatory cytokines and endothelial cell damage. The serum sialic acid binding immunoglobulin-like lectin 1 (sSIGLEC-1) is thought to be an alternative biomarker of IFN signature and may have a role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. The aim of the study was to measure the levels of sSIGLEC-1 in the serum of SLE patients in comparison to a control group and examine the associations ...

Drug-induced lupus erythematosus in childhood: Case-based review
CONCLUSION: For children presenting with SLE features, proper drug history is crucial since DILE may be more frequent than anticipated. An association of the relevant drug with the symptoms, and resolution of symptoms on drug withdrawal provides evidence for the diagnosis of DILE.PMID:38580326 | DOI:10.1177/09612033241245078 (Source: Lupus)

Lack of awareness of systemic lupus erythematosus and its consequences in a cohort of moderate and severe patients in Spain: The LupusVoice study
CONCLUSION: This study highlights the need to increase SLE awareness among patients, HCPs, and the broader public in order to improve patient QoL. Being aware of the clinical and emotional impact of such lack of awareness, as well as the role played by context on the patient experience of SLE, is a crucial step towards achieving this goal.PMID:38577967 | DOI:10.1177/09612033241242886 (Source: Lupus)

Therapeutic intersections: Expanding benefits of CD19 CAR T  cells from cancer to autoimmunity
Cell Stem Cell. 2024 Apr 4;31(4):437-438. doi: 10.1016/j.stem.2024.03.006.ABSTRACTAnti-CD19 CAR T cells were among the last decade's scientific breakthroughs, achieving remarkable remissions in patients with B cell leukemias and lymphomas. Now, the engineered cell therapies are traversing disease indications into autoimmunity and resolving disease symptoms in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), idiopathic inflammatory myositis, and systemic sclerosis.1.PMID:38579681 | DOI:10.1016/j.stem.2024.03.006 (Source: Cell Stem Cell)
