Neuroinflammation in the Dorsal Root Ganglia and Dorsal Horn Contributes to Persistence of Nociceptor Sensitization in SIV-infected ART-treated Macaques
Despite the development of antiretroviral therapy (ART), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated distal sensory polyneuropathy (HIV-DSP) has remained prevalent. Using simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected rhesus macaques, we examined molecular mechanisms of peripheral and central sensitization to infer chronic pain from HIV infection. Previous studies identified atrophy in nociceptive neurons during SIV infection, which was associated with monocyte infiltration into the dorsal root ganglia (DRG).

Unraveling the palindromic and nonpalindromic motifs of retroviral integration site sequences by statistical mixture models METHOD
A weak palindromic nucleotide motif is the hallmark of retroviral integration site alignments. Given that the majority of target sequences are not palindromic, the current model explains the symmetry by an overlap of the nonpalindromic motif present on one of the half-sites of the sequences. Here, we show that the implementation of multicomponent mixture models allows for different interpretations consistent with the existence of both palindromic and nonpalindromic submotifs in the sets of integration site sequences. We further show that the weak palindromic motifs result from freely combined site-specific submotifs restri...

HIV viral load suppression among people with mental disorders at two urban HIV clinics in Uganda: a parallel convergent mixed methods study using the social ecological model
Uganda adopted and implemented the Universal Test and Treat (UTT) guidelines in 2017, which require HIV-infected persons to be initiated on antiretroviral therapy (ART) at any CD4  + cell count, and to be routi...

Optimizing HIV case identification: investigating client characteristics predictive of HIV positivity from provider-initiated testing (PITC) in central Kenya
Routine program data indicates positivity rates under 2% from HIV testing services (HTS) at sites supported by Centre for Health Solutions-Kenya in Central Kenya. Achieving the UNAIDS 95:95:95 goals requires c...

Reaching Out-of-school Adolescent Girls and Young Women at Risk for HIV Through Their Social Networks
AbstractOut-of-school adolescent girls/young women (AGYW) in Africa are at increased risk for HIV and are underserved by HIV prevention interventions. Identifying social networks of out-of-school AGYW may be a strategic approach for reaching them. A sequential mixed methods study design was used. The PLACE (Priorities for Local AIDS Control Efforts) methodology, implemented in one ward of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, identified 69 networks of AGYW. We randomly selected 28 networks and conducted surveys and network assessments with 80.9% (n  = 310) of the members. On average, the networks consisted of 13.7 members, and had ...

Individual and Collective Forms of Stigma Resistance: Pathways Between HIV and Sex Work Stigma and Viral Suppression Among Female Sex Workers in the Dominican Republic
AbstractIntersecting forms of stigma including both HIV and sex work stigma have been known to impede HIV prevention and optimal treatment outcomes among FSW. Recent research has indicated that intersectional stigma can be resisted at the community and individual level. We assessed pathways between HIV stigma, sex work stigma, social cohesion and viral suppression among a cohort of 210 FSW living with HIV in the Dominican Republic. Through Poisson regression we explored the relationship between HIV outcomes and internalized, anticipated and enacted HIV and sex work stigma, and resisted sex work stigma. We employed structur...

South Africa: Free State Bottom of the List When It Comes to Multi-Month Dispensing of ARVs, Survey Finds
[spotlight] The percentage of people living with HIV receiving a three to six-month supply of ARVs at a time in the Free State has dropped from 13% last year to 3% this year, making the province the worst performer in multi-month dispensing of ARVs in the country. This while in Mpumalanga, 64% of people living with HIV receive a three to six-month refill as per national guidelines.

Prevalence of hepatitis B infection in the Gambian population: A narrative review of recent developments
This study reviewed the recent trends in the epidemiological characteristics of HBV in the Gambia. The researchers conducted an online literature search for primary studies on HBV prevalence published in the past two decades from Jan 1992 to Feb 2022 inclusive on Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus. All retrieved studies were assessed for eligibility according to specific inclusion/exclusion criteria, data completeness, and methodological coherence. We found that HBV infection prevalence is above 8% in The Gambia. Moreover, HBV is the most common cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Gambia. Liver cirrhosis and HCC hav...

A Systematic Review of Implementation Research on Determinants and Strategies of Effective HIV Interventions for Men Who Have Sex with Men in the United States
Annu Rev Psychol. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1146/annurev-psych-032620-035725. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMen who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV, accounting for two-thirds of HIV cases in the United States despite representing ∼5% of the adult population. Delivery and use of existing and highly effective HIV prevention and treatment strategies remain suboptimal among MSM. To summarize the state of the science, we systematically review implementation determinants and strategies of HIV-related health interventions using implementation science frameworks. Research on implementation barriers has ...
