Improving Choice, Use, and Equitable Implementation of Biomedical HIV Prevention for Women (R34 Clinical Trial Optional)
Funding Opportunity RFA-MH-24-332 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. This initiative will solicit research to target gaps in knowledge about barriers and facilitators to ring use, interventions to improve uptake, adherence, and persistence on the vaginal ring, and implementation science studies to improve access to and distribution of the ring. Research topics may include, but are not limited to: studies of individual, interpersonal, and structural factors that are barriers and facilitators to uptake of, adherence to, and persistence on the vaginal ring when the ring is delivered in real world settings (i.e., ou...

Modeling Antiretrovial Treatment to Mitigate HIV in the Brain: Impact of the Blood-Brain Barrier
In this study, we develop a mathematical model to examine the impact of the BBB on ART effectiveness for mitigating brain HIV. A thorough analysis of the model allowed us to fully characterize the global threshold dynamics with the viral clearance and persistence in the brain for the basic reproduction number less than unity and greater than unity, respectively. Our model showed that the BBB has a significant role in inhibiting the effect of ART within the brain despite the effective viral load suppression in the plasma. The level of impact, however, depends on factors such as the CNS Penetration Effectiveness (CPE) score,...

Fertility preservation and protection: young women's decision-making about contraceptive use in Zimbabwe
Cult Health Sex. 2023 Sep 20:1-15. doi: 10.1080/13691058.2023.2258175. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe study explored social and health system influences on young women's decision-making about family planning in a community setting with low uptake. Seventy-two semi-structured interviews were conducted between April 2020 and November 2021, with both young women accessing, and healthcare workers providing, a community-based integrated package of HIV and sexual and reproductive health services (CHIEDZA) in Zimbabwe. Data were thematically analysed. Although long-acting contraception was freely available as part of the CHIED...

Understanding the social and structural context of oral PrEP delivery: an ethnography exploring barriers and facilitators impacting transgender women who engage in street-based sex work in Baltimore, Maryland
AIDS Res Ther. 2023 Sep 20;20(1):69. doi: 10.1186/s12981-023-00556-6.ABSTRACTTransgender women who sell sex (TWSS) experience high rates of HIV acquisition. Antiretrovirals for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) represent an efficacious HIV prevention strategy. The social and structural factors affecting PrEP delivery amongst TWSS are underexplored in the literature. We conducted ethnographic research to examine how multilevel social and structural factors manifest in TWSS's lived experiences and affect PrEP delivery and use. Twenty-four transgender women were recruited from the SAPPHIRE cohort and completed interviews focuse...

Barriers and facilitators to implementing advanced HIV disease screening at  a secondary referral hospital -Malawi: a convergent parallel study
CONCLUSION: The study has identified major contextual barriers to AHD screening including knowledge gap, poor communication systems and inadequate supporting resources. Improving uptake of AHD screening services would therefore require overcoming the existing barriers by adopting a comprehensive approach in developing barrier-tailored strategies.PMID:37730619 | DOI:10.1186/s12913-023-10009-5
