Rethinking Literacy Intervention: Addressing a Practice Gap With Best Practices From Multisensory Structured Language Approaches
CONCLUSIONS: MSL strategies may be considered in literacy intervention as a means to optimize the academic gains of children with dyslexia in a school setting. Furthermore, SLPs should be considered integral participants in discussions of policies and practices related to the diagnosis and treatment of literacy disorders, including dyslexia.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.23228483.PMID:37276454 | DOI:10.1044/2023_LSHSS-22-00133

A multi-dimensional framework for characterizing the role of writing system variation in literacy learning: a case study in Malayalam
AbstractMost children across the world learn to read and write in non-alphabetic orthographies such as abjads (e.g., Arabic), abugidas (e.g., Ethiopic Ge ’ez), and morphosyllabaries (e.g., Chinese). However, most theories of reading, reading development, and dyslexia derive from a relatively narrow empirical base of research in English—an outlier alphabetic orthography—and a handful of mainly Western European Roman alphabets. Consideration of t he full spectrum of the world’s writing systems reveals multiple dimensions of writing system complexity, each of which could possibly create obstacles for the developing re...

Neural Correlates of Statistical Learning in Developmental Dyslexia: An Electroencephalography Study
We examined mismatch negativity elicited by statistical deviants (sMMN), and MMN elicited by location deviants (i.e., acoustic changes). Acoustic deviants elicited a MMN which was larger in the control group than in the developmental dyslexia group. Statistical deviants elicited a small, yet significant, sMMN in the control group, but not in the developmental dyslexia group. However, the difference between the groups was not significant. Our findings indicate that the neural mechanisms underlying pre-attentive acoustic change detection and implicit statistical auditory learning are both affected in developmental dyslexia.P...

Comparison of children with and without dyslexia using functional head impulse test and pediatric balance scale
ConclusionsAs a novel test, f-HIT, revealed the difference in functionality of vestibular performance in the dyslexia group. In the dyslexia group, f-HIT may be helpful in evaluating and monitoring the vestibular system.

Cumulative genetic score of KIAA0319 affects reading ability in Chinese children: moderation by parental education and mediation by rapid automatized naming
KIAA0319, a well-studied candidate gene, has been shown to be associated with reading ability and developmental dyslexia. In the present study, we investigated whether KIAA0319 affects reading ability by interact...

Genetic and protein interaction studies between the ciliary dyslexia candidate genes DYX1C1 and DCDC2
CONCLUSIONS: In summary, we describe the physical and functional interaction between the two genes DYX1C1 and DCDC2. These results contribute to the growing understanding of the molecular roles of DYX1C1 and DCDC2 and set the stage for future functional studies.PMID:37237337 | PMC:PMC10224228 | DOI:10.1186/s12860-023-00483-4

Division of labor between phonology and semantics during reading and spelling in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia
AbstractIt has been widely accepted that developmental dyslexia (DD) exhibits deficits in reading and spelling. However, the role of phonology and semantics in reading and spelling in dyslexia has not been systematically investigated. In Experiment 1, 45 Chinese children with DD and 43 age-matched controls read two tests with Chinese characters. One test controlled character ’s familiarity and regularity, and the other test controlled character’s phonological consistency and semantic transparency. In Experiment 2, 43 Chinese children with DD and 41 controls spelled a sublist of characters in the two tests in Experiment...
