how to talk about my GPA trend?
so essentially my sophomore year my grades started falling- I had some personal issues going on but i know that adcoms doesn't like it when you talk about depression. Another thing that was going on was an undiagnosed learning disability---> Essentially i went from 20 ppl classes in HS to being homeschooled my freshman year bc of COVID to 300-level classes. I noticed that I was doing better in my more challenging honors classes (that had a smaller class size) And... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Depression as a rising M4
M3 here on my last rotation (4 wks left). I've struggled with mental health for years, but M3 year has been so stressful that things took a nose dive. I have a good support system, I see a therapist, I take meds, do what I can to take care of myself, but I feel like I'm hanging on by a thread. I haven't failed anything but I have gotten very mediocre clinical grades all year (probably gonna be 3rd quartile in my class) and just generally feel down in the dumps most days. I honestly want to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Any thoughts on Suicide Crisis Syndrome?
Does anyone know much about the proposed category of Suicide Crisis Syndrome, which attempts to codify a separate DSM disorder for suicidal behavior? The criterion describe a process model of suicide that involves essentially hopelessness, rumination, and panic. The rationale for inclusion is basically so payors will care about it as far as I can tell, but I also just got a brief intro from a recorded lecture recently. In case you don't know what I'm talking about, here's a systematic... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Interesting article on students with clinical depression who do and do not identify as depressed/having depression
Many depressed students don't identify as such (opinion) And that might not be a bad thing, Isaac L. Ahuvia writes. www.insidehighered.com Thoughts? The author's take away is that we should perhaps not encourage labeling/diagnosis of depression, as that may lead to less engagement in positive coping behaviors. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Ketamine
I have an medically complex patient with severe pain and severe MDD. They were admitted to the medical hospital and in conjunction with the pain service we initiated PO ketamine. Frankly, I was blown away by the response. Rapid, immediate improvement in both pain and depression which has also allowed them to progress medically. I truly think the ketamine is having a direct effect on this patients depression and the mental status improvement isn't just mediated through reduction in pain. The... Feeling Discouraged-Seeking Advice
I recently graduated from college last year, with a major in neuroscience. I was premed, and decided to take the veterinarian route this year. So I have lots of hours to catch up on. Issue: I really messed up my senior year of college. Depression hit me so hard, and I failed multiple classes. I did well on my prerequisites, but I know vet schools mainly focus on the last 45 credits, which senior year dragged me down. Other than that, I got As in all upper level neuro classes, but failed... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Advice on multiple antipsychotics in an acute setting
PGY2 here. My experience has basically mostly been with depression addiction until now. I've been rotated to an acute ward and have more exposure now to psychosis (and obviously antipsychotics). I'm having issues understanding the correct use of antipsychotics. Every attending has their own take on the subject and all of the sources I read postulate their own opinions and algorithms. Here is one of my current patients, with whom I'm having problems understanding how to proceed. As, I have... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Lower Credit Load, 4 Withdrawals, & 4.5 Years

My withdrawals were from a bipolar diagnosis. My 10 credit semester was from major depression which I recovered from, and my 12 credit semesters are because I had to take... Sending clients to the ER
I have a client with bipolar1 disorder who went through a depressive phase with suicidal ideation, intent, and behavior. I was gone for two weeks and when I returned, she didn’t tell me even though I always ask. At the beginning of January, she began taking ever increasing doses of a medication that can be lethal. At our appointment Friday, she confessed she had been doing this. Two days prior, she took the highest dose she ever has. She lost the ability to walk and use her legs. Somehow... Thoughts on invol hosp for SI
Hey there guys. We were having this discussion on another thread, so I decided to create this one. What are your real thoughts about the subject? This is much more common in the US than in other countries, and I do believe it is mostly CYA than actual treatment. I have seen some very absurd cases of people being locked up due to "SI" when it was actually not. I actually think it's quite harmful to just throw people in a little jail for a few days when they say they have suicide... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

College Psychiatry
What are some pluses and minuses of a gig being a psychiatrist for a college campus? Other than low pay likely. Minuses off the top of my head (and I have a bias against the outpatient world): 1. Likely a fair amount of reading up on adhd and psychostimulant seeking (this is actually in line with my exposure to this cohort w/in a more general adult population and outpatient settings). 2. Higher risk age group for suicide (Source: Student Doctor Network)
