Inspiring Curiosity and Restoring Humility: The Evolution of Competency-Based Continuing Medical Education
Dr. David Price and his colleagues, in their article in this issue of Academic Medicine, summarize the findings from recent studies regarding the association of Maintenance of Certification and physicians’ learning and improvements in care. Their evaluation demonstrates that physicians often changed their practice because of these educational interventions. In this Invited Commentary, the author argues that, although this finding is reassuring, it may be the right answer to the wrong question. The critical questions the profession faces are whether physicians have the humility to routinely submit themselves to the judgme...

Strategies to Fill the Gaps in Nutrition Education for Health Professionals through Continuing Medical Education
AbstractPurpose of ReviewRecent studies have documented that diet quality in the US is poor and linked to higher rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD), other non-communicable diseases, and total mortality. As a result, nutrition counseling in clinical practice is an evidence-based strategy endorsed by numerous stakeholders. However, medical nutrition education (MNE) in the US has been inadequate, and physician knowledge, competencies, and practices related to diet counseling have been documented to be insufficient. National scientific meetings and conferences offer opportunities to translate new scientific evidence, guidel...

Health After Cancer: An Innovative Continuing Medical Education Course Integrating Cancer Survivorship Into Primary Care
Problem The transition from oncology care back to primary care after cancer therapy is challenging for cancer survivors who seek services that address the effect of their cancer history on their present health. Lack of knowledge about the health needs of cancer survivors is a barrier to incorporating survivorship care into primary care practice. Formal training in cancer survivorship is rarely included in medical education and presents an opportunity for intervention. Approach The authors developed (January 2019–March 2020) an online continuing medical education (CME) course for primary care physicians (PCPs) ...

Medical education research: is participation fair?
Abstract Medical researchers and ethicists emphasise the importance of equity, fairness and justice in general medical research participation. No individual or group should be over-represented or under-represented in research—there should be fair participation. Thus far little thought has been given to fair participation in medical education research. There is no evidence based answer as to whether vulnerable groups are ever exploited in medical education research, or whether other individuals or groups are overlooked. However the heavy reliance on undergraduate learners as subjects for medical education resear...

Effect of Novel Continuing Medical Education Curriculum on Attitudes and Understanding of Primary Care Medicine for the Naval Surface Provider.
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates improvement in Naval surface provider knowledge and attitudes in a variety of subject areas after implementation of a novel curriculum tailored specifically to address the unique considerations for practice at sea. Material was beneficial to all trainees despite significant differences in training background. Confidence gained as a result of the course was directly correlated to perceived relevance of the material, but not to educational background. Future work could investigate the use of curriculum in deployed providers and incorporation into current training of the OPNAVINST 6400.1c, ...

Validation of a Teaching Effectiveness Assessment in Psychiatry Continuing Medical Education
ConclusionsThis study provides a new, validated measure of CME teaching effectiveness that could be used to improve psychiatry CME. In contrast to prior research in other medical specialties, CME teaching effectiveness scores were not associated with use of case-based or interactive presentations.
