Food Allergies: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Aug;108(2):159-165.ABSTRACTIn the United States, approximately 2% to 3% of adults and 8% of children have a food allergy. Allergic reactions range from minor pruritus to life-threatening anaphylaxis. These allergies often lead to significant anxiety and costs for patients and caregivers. Common food allergies include peanuts, cow's milk, shellfish, tree nuts, egg, fish, soy, and wheat. Peanut allergy, the most common, is the leading cause of life-threatening anaphylaxis. Children with asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, or an allergy to insect venom, medications, or latex are at an increase...

Bioactive peptides in preterm human milk: Impact of maternal characteristics and their association to neonatal outcomes
Hormone content of very preterm human milk is partially determined by maternal factors most of them regarding metabolic health and obstetric characteristics. Human milk concentration impacts on growth and development of preterm infants during their stay in the neonatal unit. AbstractHuman milk adipokines in term babies seem partially determined by maternal factors and affect infant's development. We aimed to describe bioactive peptide concentration in very preterm human milk and associations to maternal characteristics and postnatal growth. Mothers delivering ≤32 weeks of gestation and their infant/s were recruited. At...

Highlights from the literature
Green banana, rice semolina and persistent diarrhoea Persistent diarrhoea (PD) is defined as diarrhoea continuing for greater than 14 days. Lucina hadn’t realised that, globally, especially in low economic resource countries, persistent diarrhoea has a much higher mortality associated with it compared with acute diarrhoea, accounting for nearly 60% of deaths due to diarrhoea. Major risk factors associated with PD are lack of breastfeeding, poor underlying nutrition, overuse and misuse of antibiotics and recurrent infections. How best to treat such a potentially devastating condition? Sarmin M et al (Acta Paediatrica ...
