Combining unsupervised, supervised and rule-based learning: the case of detecting patient allergies in electronic health records
Data mining of electronic health records (EHRs) has a huge potential for improving clinical decision support and to help healthcare deliver precision medicine. Unfortunately, the rule-based and machine learnin...

Claims about food allergies
I find it is very difficult to trust written material on this topic, nonetheless here is a hypothesis I had not heard before: So why have our immune systems suddenly gone haywire? One theory notes that we (mostly) eradicated hookworms by the 1980s in the United States. And roundworms. And…#andrewvandam #rss

Disposable and instrument-free nucleic acid lateral flow cassette for rapid and on-site identification of adulterated goat milk
In this study, we have introduced an innovative nucleic acid labeling method. The loop primers of loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) have been modified with amplification terminator spacer C3 and an oligonucleotide sequence, thus eliminating the requirement for costly antibodies in traditional nucleic acid LFS. This modification not only lowers costs but also enables multiple detections. Additionally, we have integrated the LAMP and LFS assay steps into a microfluidic chip, allowing convenient on-site detection while effectively preventing aerosol contamination of LAMP products. The testing process includes rapi...

Ig Nobel Prizes honor zombie spiders, rock-licking scientists, and a clever commode
Why do scientists lick rocks? The answer is disappointingly sensible, says Jan Zalasiewicz, a geologist at the University of Leicester. Mineral particles within rocks stand out better on a wet surface than on a dry one, so licking makes rocks easier to identify in the field. And Zalasiewicz waxes nostalgic for the days when scientists did more than just lick rocks—they cooked and, in some cases, actually ate the materials they studied , he noted in a 2017 essay written for the Paleontological Association’s newsletter. “We’ve lost the art of recognizing rocks by taste,” he laments. For the creative...

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine": maternal vitamin D status and supplementation in pregnancy and their effect on neonatal and childhood outcomes
Hormones (Athens). 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.1007/s42000-023-00486-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVitamin D (VD) plays a crucial role in regulating calcium homeostasis, while the wealth of its pleiotropic actions is gaining increasing research interest. Sufficient VD concentrations are of clinical relevance, particularly in the context of physiological alterations, such as those occurring during pregnancy when maternal VD is the sole source for the developing fetus. As a result, inadequate VD concentrations in pregnancy have been associated with perinatal complications and adverse neonatal outcomes, including preeclampsia, ge...

Risk factors predisposing children to food allergies
CONCLUSION: The most important aspect of this study was that it separately identified prenatal, neonatal, and postnatal risk factors for IgE- and non-IgE-mediated food allergies.PMID:37695233 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v51i5.937

Does the severity of atopic dermatitis change with allergic sensitization? Is it real or a myth?
CONCLUSION: While guidelines recommend investigating food allergies in moderate to severe AD, this study found no significant difference in the relationship between AD severity and the presence of FA. However, inhalant allergen sensitivity was linked to increased AD severity. Therefore, a comprehensive patient history should include an evaluation of food allergies in children with AD, regardless of disease severity. Elimination and provocation tests related to suspected food items should be performed, and allergenic foods should be removed from the diet if they are found to contribute to the allergy.PMID:37695232 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v51i5.921

Quality of life in children with food allergies, psychiatric symptoms, and caregiving burden of their mothers
CONCLUSION: In order to develop a multidisciplinary approach for children with food allergies, we conceived as appropriate to inform their families about the difficulties of caregiving and psychosocial disorders that could develop over time. They also must be informed to take preventive measures as well as the medical aspects of their children's disease.PMID:37695230 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v51i5.860

Prevalence and time trends of symptoms of allergic rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis in Spanish children: Global Asthma Network (GAN) study
CONCLUSIONS: There has been a stabilisation of rhinitis, rhinoconjunctivitis and nasal allergy in schoolchildren that slows the previous upward trend of ISAAC; and a slight non-significant increase in rhinoconjunctivitis and nasal allergy in adolescents. The variability found in adolescents would require local research to be better understood.PMID:37695222 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v51i1.711

The Influence of Sex Hormones and X Chromosome in Immune Responses
Curr Top Microbiol Immunol. 2023;441:21-59. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-35139-6_2.ABSTRACTMales and females differ in their susceptibility to develop autoimmunity and allergy but also in their capacity to cope with infections and cancers. Cellular targets and molecular pathways underlying sexual dimorphism in immunity have started to emerge and appeared multifactorial. It became increasingly clear that sex-linked biological factors have important impact on the development, tissue maintenance and effector function acquisition of distinct immune cell populations, thereby regulating multiple layers of innate or adaptive immunity t...

The clinical pharmacist role in patients with suspected allergy to beta-lactams: A systematic review
CONCLUSION: The pharmacist intervention in the evaluation of the patient with suspected allergy to beta-lactams is effective, safe and feasible to implement on daily clinical practice. The standardization of protocols to clarify the history of allergies and development of evaluation tools represent simple screenings to perform delabelling or refer to the Immunoallergology service, improving penicilins use and reducing the need for second line antibiotics. More studies are needed to standardize the desensitization tests made by pharmacists. However, despite these results, the involvement and leadership of the pharmacist in ...
