Management of growth hormone-secreting pituitary adenomas causing acromegaly: a practical review of surgical and multimodal management strategies for neurosurgeons
J Neurosurg. 2023 Nov 10:1-10. doi: 10.3171/2023.8.JNS221975. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis review aimed to highlight the history, diagnostic criteria, preoperative prognostic factors, surgical management, and multimodal adjuvant therapies recommended to provide a comprehensive and multifaceted understanding of and clinical approach to treating growth hormone-secreting pituitary adenomas (GHPAs) in patients with acromegaly. The authors collated and reviewed published studies, many written by skull base neurosurgeons, endocrinologists, and radiation oncologists with expertise in pituitary adenoma management, to produce...

Osteosarcopenia in acromegaly: reduced muscle quality and increased vertebral fat deposition
ConclusionAcromegalic patients had reduced SMQ and pelvic BMD, but greater vertebral MRI-PDFF. Although lean tissue increases in AA, this does not affect SMQ. Therefore, increased vertebral MRI-PDFF in controlled acromegalic patients may be due to ectopic adiposity. (Source: Journal of Endocrinological Investigation)

Centralized red muscle in < em > Odontaspis ferox < /em > and the prevalence of regional endothermy in sharks
Biol Lett. 2023 Nov;19(11):20230331. doi: 10.1098/rsbl.2023.0331. Epub 2023 Nov 8.ABSTRACTThe order Lamniformes contains charismatic species such as the white shark Carcharodon carcharias and extinct megatooth shark Otodus megalodon, and is of particular interest given their influence on marine ecosystems, and because some members exhibit regional endothermy. However, there remains significant debate surrounding the prevalence and evolutionary origin of regional endothermy in the order, and therefore the development of phenomena such as gigantism and filter-feeding in sharks generally. Here we show a basal lamniform shark,...

Revisiting the usefulness of the short acute octreotide test to predict treatment outcomes in acromegaly
ConclusionThe sAOT is a good predictor tool for assessing response to SRLs and correlates with tumor E-cadherin and SSTR2 expression. Thus, it can be useful in clinical practice for therapeutic decision-making in patients with acromegaly. (Source: Frontiers in Endocrinology)

Assessment of forearm muscles with ultrasound shear wave elastography in patients with acromegaly
ConclusionThe patients with acromegaly have an increased muscle thickness but decreased muscle stiffness in the forearm muscles responsible for elbow flexion. Acromegaly can lead to a permanent deterioration of the muscular structure regardless of the disease activity. (Source: Pituitary)

The effect of acromegaly on thyroid disease
Endocr J. 2023 Oct 25. doi: 10.1507/endocrj.EJ23-0356. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLong-term stimulation of thyroid follicular epithelium by high growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in patients with acromegaly can lead to thyroid dysfunction, goiter, thyroid nodules, and even thyroid cancer and thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). Excessive GH/IGF-1 promotes goiter and thyroid nodule formation, which can be reversed by normalizing the IGF-1 levels with surgery or medical treatment. Whether patients with acromegaly have an increased risk of thyroid cancer remains controversial, and routine thy...
