Is it appropriate to label members of the public 'rubbish?
Thank you very much for your very considered letter. The intention behind the cover line was: 1) What will make vets read this story? 2) The owners in question aren’t vet clients – they are people who use the internet for care advice and, as a result, a significant number aren’t doing a very good job. However, I think you are right to raise this challenge and, on reflection, I agree this cover line is a bit too ‘tabloid’ in tone and could be seen as undermining the client-vet relationship. In order to ensure this doesn’t happen again, we have put in a place a new process where the cover ...

Is it appropriate to label members of the public 'rubbish?
I have been a regular reader of the Veterinary Record since before I qualified as a veterinary surgeon. I entirely understand that these are difficult times for print media, that reading habits change and that newspapers and journals must evolve to remain current and relevant. However, I was very concerned when I saw on the cover of last week’s Veterinary Record (October 21, 2017, vol 181) the headline, ‘Reptiles. Why are people so rubbish at looking after them?’. To me, this is an entirely inappropriate form of words to be published on the front cover of a professional journal. I have spoken with several...

Could rabies be imported into the UK through rescued street dogs?
I read of the justified concern arising from the importation of cattle from an area where bluetongue virus is endemic (VR, October 28, 2017, vol 181, p 435). Despite this, the UK continues to allow, and possibly encourages, the importation of street dogs rescued from areas where rabies remains endemic in the wildlife population and occasionally spills over into domestic canids. Once removed from the streets, a dog can be vaccinated against rabies and transported across Europe to the UK after three weeks. If the dog was uninfected at the time of rescue, it is highly unlikely to then be exposed to disease, but is vaccinated ...

Ritual religious slaughter in the UK
AS Maureen Hutchinson’s letter (VR, October 7, 2017, vol 181, p 375) advocating banning non-stun slaughter in the UK highlights: ‘We as a profession should be doing all we can to campaign for an end to the [non-stun] practice.’ We at the BVA and the Veterinary Public Health Agency (VPHA) completely agree; slaughter without effective pre-stunning unnecessarily compromises animal welfare and both organisations have, for many years, been jointly and proactively campaigning for an end to non-stun slaughter in the UK. We continue to lobby parliamentarians on welfare at slaughter, including banning non-stun sla...

Welfare and conservation of UK wildlife
Recently, I have increasingly enjoyed the wide and more controversial range of subjects covered in Veterinary Record. In a recent editorial (VR, October 21, 2017, vol 181, p 410), Adele Waters raised some of the important issues and even sacred cows that are often kept out of sight. She raised the problems there are in bringing together the vets with wide differences in their motivation and concepts of animal welfare. This is relevant to both individuals and different areas of the profession. She quoted from the authoritative address given by Alick Simmons, former deputy chief veterinary officer, at the recent British Vete...
