Prognostic significance of lymph node count in surgically treated patients with T < sub > 2-4 < /sub > stage nonmetastatic adrenocortical carcinoma
CONCLUSIONS: Lymphadenectomy provides a prognostic benefit in nmACC patients and identifies pN1 patients with dismal prognosis. Conversely, in pN0 patients, a LNC cut-off ≥4 identifies those with particularly favorable prognosis.PMID:38653591 | DOI:10.1016/j.urolonc.2024.04.003 (Source: Urologic Oncology)

HIVEC as an alternative option in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer: Experiences from a high-volume center
CONCLUSION: Chemohyperthermia using HIVEC results in high recurrence-free survival and a 2-year progression-free survival rate of 98% with a bladder preservation rate of almost 80%. Comparing our data, HIVEC shows better oncological results together with better tolerability and safety making HIVEC a good alternative for patients who refuse radical cystectomy or who are ineligible for radical cystectomy.PMID:38653592 | DOI:10.1016/j.urolonc.2024.01.300 (Source: Urologic Oncology)

Preoperative risk calculator for the probability of completing nephron sparing for kidney cancer
CONCLUSIONS: The probability of PN completion can be preoperatively assessed, with optimal accuracy relaying on routinely available clinical information. The proposed model might be useful in preoperative decision-making, patient consensus, or during preoperative counselling.PATIENT SUMMARY: In patients with a renal mass the probability of completing a partial nephrectomy varies considerably and without a predictive model is invariably inaccurate and subjective. In this study we build-up a risk calculator based on easily available preoperative variables that can predict with optimal accuracy the probability of not removing...

Avoiding "Needless" nephrectomy: What is the role of small renal mass biopsy in 2024?
Urol Oncol. 2024 Apr 19:S1078-1439(24)00422-8. doi: 10.1016/j.urolonc.2024.04.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCurrent guidelines do not mandate routine preoperative renal mass biopsy (RMB) for small renal masses (SRMs), which results in a considerable rate (18%-26%) of needless nephrectomy/partial nephrectomy for benign renal tumors. In light of this ongoing practice, a narrative review was conducted to examine the role of routine RMB for SRM. First, arguments justifying the current non-biopsy approach to SRM are critically reviewed and contested. Second, as a standalone procedure, RMB is critically assessed; RMB was fo...

Natural history and health care burden of non-curative treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Untreated muscle-invasive bladder cancer is associated with a limited lifespan and a high disease burden for the patient and health system. These data should be taken into consideration and portrayed to the patient when curative intent treatment is chosen to be avoided.PMID:38641474 | DOI:10.1016/j.urolonc.2024.03.009 (Source: Urologic Oncology)

Use of inpatient palliative care in metastatic urethral cancer
CONCLUSION: IPC use in metastatic urethral cancer increased from a marginal rate of 5.8% to as high as 28%. Ideally, differences according to sex, metastatic site, and region should be addressed to improve IPC use rates.PMID:38627106 | DOI:10.1016/j.urolonc.2024.03.019 (Source: Urologic Oncology)

Estimation of the incidence of urachal cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis of registry-based studies
CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides an up-to-date comparison of estimated incidence rates between 6 countries of 3 continents based on rigorously selected registry-based studies. The results suggest low incidence rates for UrC with considerable geographic differences. The present meta-analysis provides unbiased registry-based data on the incidence, clinicopathological parameters and survival of UrC.PMID:38627107 | DOI:10.1016/j.urolonc.2024.03.011 (Source: Urologic Oncology)

Precision medicine for prostate cancer: An international perspective
Urol Oncol. 2024 Apr 12:S1078-1439(24)00334-X. doi: 10.1016/j.urolonc.2024.02.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGreater personalization of cancer medicine continues to shape therapy development and patient selection accordingly. The treatment of prostate cancer has evolved considerably since the discovery of androgen deprivation therapy. The comprehensive profiling of the prostate cancer genome has mapped the targetable molecular landscape of the disease and identified opportunities for the implementation of novel and combination therapies. In this review, we provide an overview of the molecular biology of prostate cancer...

Timing, incidence and management of delayed bleeding after partial nephrectomy in patients at risk for recurrent, bilateral, multifocal renal tumors
CONCLUSIONS: Delayed bleeding after PN in a cohort of patients with multifocal tumors is an infrequent event, with similar rates to single tumor series. Patients should be counseled regarding timing and symptoms of delayed bleeding and multidisciplinary management with interventional radiology is critical for timely diagnosis and treatment.PMID:38614921 | DOI:10.1016/j.urolonc.2024.03.004 (Source: Urologic Oncology)
