Isolated or Combined Ascending Aortic Replacement through a Partial Sternotomy: Early and Midterm Outcomes
CONCLUSION: The surgical ascending aorta replacement through a partial sternotomy is associated with longer operative times, but this does not affect the early as well as the long-term follow-up.PMID:38626901 | DOI:10.1055/s-0044-1782186 (Source: The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon)

Partial versus Complete Sternotomy for Aortic Valve Replacement-Multicenter Study
CONCLUSION: In a large, German multicenter cohort, MACCE rates were comparable in surgical aortic valve replacement through partial upper and complete sternotomies. Shorter ICU stay and lower rates of Dressler's syndrome and rehospitalization were in favor of the partial sternotomy group.PMID:38626902 | DOI:10.1055/s-0044-1782685 (Source: The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon)

Managing One-Lung Ventilation in Tracheostomized Patients: A 6-Year Retrospective Analysis
CONCLUSION: The management of one-lung ventilation in tracheotomized patients presents unique challenges. While double-lumen tracheostomy tubes have specific advantages, we recommend considering their use carefully. For most tracheotomized patients, bronchial blockers in conjunction with a tracheostomy tube are used, which offers safety and practicality, irrespective of the tracheostomy's age or type. Further research and randomized controlled trials are warranted to establish best practices for one-lung ventilation in this unique patient population.PMID:38626903 | DOI:10.1055/s-0044-1782684 (Source: The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon)

Computed Tomography-Based Body Composition is Related to Perioperative Morbidity in Older Lung Transplant Recipients
CONCLUSION: Body composition parameters determined in pretransplant chest CT scans in older LTx candidates might aid in identifying high-risk patients with a worse perioperative outcome after LTx.PMID:38626904 | DOI:10.1055/s-0044-1782683 (Source: The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon)

Impact of Age on the Relationship between Cross-Clamp Time and Mortality in Cardiac Surgery
Thorac Cardiovasc Surg DOI: 10.1055/a-2263-1933Age is an independent risk factor for mortality even when all known comorbidities are considered. Thus, other factors may additionally contribute to the age-associated risk. We performed a systematic literature search and identified 161 manuscripts, of which 32 studies (18,256 patients) were analyzed. Cross-clamp time correlated with observed mortality. The increase in mortality risk with cross-clamp time was much greater in older patients than in younger patients. The log odds ratio (OR) for age and cross-clamp time was 0.07 and 0.01, respectively, which was highly significan...

Recent Outcomes of Surgical Redo Aortic Valve Replacement in Prosthetic Valve Failure
Conclusion The relatively high risk of redo AVR was due to reoperation for prosthetic valve endocarditis. The outcomes of redo AVR for nonendocarditis are excellent. Our findings suggest that patients without endocarditis, especially with acceptable LVEF, can be treated safely with redo AVR. Isolated tricuspid valve surgery for functional tricuspid regurgitation
CONCLUSION: More than half of the patients who underwent isolated TV surgery for functional TR had undergone left-sided valve surgery and had significant heart failure symptoms at the time of surgery. Further studies on the surgical indication for concomitant TV surgery at the time of left-sided valve surgery and the appropriate timing of surgery for isolated functional TR are needed to improve survival.PMID:38580322 | DOI:10.1055/a-2300-6791 (Source: The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon)
