Natural history of gastric leiomyoma
ConclusionsMost gastric leiomyomas are benign SETs, and an increase in size is not frequent, even in large-sized cases. Close monitoring with routine follow-up without resection may be sufficient in cases of histologically proven gastric leiomyoma. However, in cases of ulceration or size increase, resection may be beneficial.Graphical abstract (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Five-year outcomes of revisional bariatric surgery: gastric band to sleeve gastrectomy or to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
ConclusionConversion of AGB to RYGB is associated with superior intermediate-term weight loss compared to conversion of AGB to LSG. Future multicenter studies with larger sample sizes are necessary to further describe the intermediate-term outcomes of revisional bariatric surgery. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Two-lung ventilation with artificial pneumothorax on cerebral desaturation and early postoperative cognitive outcome: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionCompared to OLV, TLV had a lower incidence of CDE and delayed neurocognitive recovery in elderly patients undergoing MIE. The method of TLV combined with carbon dioxide artificial pneumothorax may be an option for these elderly patients.Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (identifier: ChiCTR1900027454). Optimal cutoff values of drain amylase for predicting pancreatic fistula are different between open and laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy
ConclusionsDFA on POD three is an independent predictor for CR-POPF after both ODP and LDP. However, the optimal cutoff value for it is significantly higher after LDP than after ODP. Optimal threshold of DFA for drain removal may be different between ODP and LDP.Graphical abstract (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

The evidence behind robot-assisted abdominopelvic surgery: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
ConclusionOur study suggests that compared to laparoscopy, robotic surgery may improve hospital length of stay and open conversion rates, with added benefits in experienced robotic surgeons showing lower overall intraoperative complications and comparable operative times. Risk factors associated with functional esophageal disorders (FED) versus gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
DiscussionThis is the first report of a greater risk of FED in patients with underweight BMI, insomnia, chronic pain, allergic rhinitis, or of Asian or Hispanic ethnicities. The weak associations between female gender and anxiety are corroborated in other studies. Our findings enable clinicians to better screen patients with reflux for this disorder.Graphical abstract (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Intensive pre-operative information course (IPIC) and pre-operative weight loss results in long-term sustained weight loss following bariatric surgery: 11  years results from a tertiary referral centre
ConclusionsIPIC and higher pre-operative weight loss improve weight loss post-bariatric surgery and reduce the likelihood of weight regain during long-term follow-up. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Impact on carotid intima-media thickness after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in patients with morbid obesity
ConclusionWe observed a significant reduction in CIMT& improvement in 2D ECHO parameters at 6 after LSG although no statistically significant change was observed in mean right CIMT& EF at 6  months. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

The death of laparoscopy
ConclusionsThe study suggests a transformative shift towards robotic-assisted surgery, poised to dominate various minimally invasive procedures. The forecasts indicate that robotic surgery may surpass laparoscopy and open surgery in colectomies, proctectomies, pancreatectomies, and esophagectomies by 2025. This anticipated change emphasizes the need for proactive adjustments in surgical training programs to align with evolving surgical practices. The findings have substantial implications for future healthcare practices, necessitating a balance between traditional laparoscopy and the burgeoning role of robotic-assisted sur...

Ultrasound-guided robotic surgical procedures: a systematic review
ConclusionThe advantages of robotic instrumentation, including ergonomics, dexterity, and precision of movements, are of relevance for robotic intraoperative ultrasound (RIOUS). The present systematic review demonstrates the virtue of RIOUS to support surgeons and potentially reduce minimally invasive procedure times. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Robot-assisted versus laparoscopic-assisted gastrectomy among malnourished patients with gastric cancer based on textbook outcome
ConclusionsFor malnourished patients with GC, RAG performed by experienced surgeons can achieved a higher rate of TO than those of LAG, which directly contributed to better AC compliance and a faster restoration of nutritional status. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Efficacy and safety of long-term indwelling plastic stents after resolution of pancreatic fluid collections with endoscopic transmural drainage: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsOur results show that LTIS after PFC resolution with ETD is feasible, safe, and superior to SSR in reducing the risk of PFC recurrence and need for interventions. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Single anastomosis duodenal switch versus Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in patients with BMI  ≥ 50 kg/m2: a multi-centered comparative analysis
ConclusionsIn our cohort, SADI-S was associated with higher and sustained weight-loss results compared to RYGB. Comorbidity resolution was also higher after SADI-S. Both procedures demonstrate a similar safety profile. Further studies are required to validate the long-term safety of SADI-S compared to other bariatric procedures. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Index admission cholecystectomy for biliary acute pancreatitis or choledocholithiasis reduces 30-day readmission rates in children
ConclusionsIndex cholecystectomy was performed in only 59% of pediatric patients admitted with BAP or choledocholithiasis but was associated with 84% decreased odds of readmission within 30  days. Current guidelines should be updated to reflect these findings, and future studies should evaluate barriers to index cholecystectomy. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Timing of readmissions for complications following emergency colectomy: follow-up beyond post-operative day 30 matters
This study aimed to assess the readmission rate and factors associated with readmission 6-months following emergency colectomy.MethodsA retrospective cohort study of adult patients who underwent emergency colectomy (2010 –2018) was performed using the Nationwide Readmissions Database. The cohort was divided into two groups: (i) no readmission and (ii) emergency readmission(s) for complications related to colectomy (defined using ICD-9/10 codes). Readmissions were categorized as either “early” (POD0–30) or “ late” (>  POD30). Differences between groups were described and multivariable regression controlling...
