Cardiovascular safety of psychedelic medicine: current status and future directions
Pharmacol Rep. 2023 Oct 24. doi: 10.1007/s43440-023-00539-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPsychedelics are powerful psychoactive substances that alter perception and mood processes. Their effectiveness in the treatment of psychiatric diseases was known before their prohibition. An increasing number of recent studies, due to the indisputable resurgence of serotonergic hallucinogens, have shown their efficacy in alleviating depression, anxiety, substance abuse therapies, and existential distress treatment in patients facing life-threatening illness. Psychedelics are generally considered to be physiologically safe with low t...

Development and application of a systematic and quantitative weighting framework to evaluate the quality and relevance of relative potency estimates for dioxin-like compounds (DLCs) for human health risk assessment
Regul Toxicol Pharmacol. 2023 Oct 20:105500. doi: 10.1016/j.yrtph.2023.105500. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) approach for dioxin-like chemicals (DLCs) is currently based on a qualitative assessment of a heterogeneous data set of relative estimates of potency (REPs) spanning several orders of magnitude with highly variable study quality and relevance. An effort was undertaken to develop a weighting framework to systematically evaluate and quantitatively integrate the quality and relevance for development of more robust TEFs. Six main-study characteristics were identified as most importan...

Compromised diabetic heart function is not affected by miR-378a upregulation upon hyperglycemia
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, data underline the role of miR-378a in maintaining basal cardiac structural integrity while pointing to miR-378a-independent hyperglycemia-driven cardiac hypertrophy and associated dysfunction.PMID:37851320 | DOI:10.1007/s43440-023-00535-8 (Source: Pharmacological Reports)

The effect of brain serotonin deficit (TPH2-KO) on the expression and activity of liver cytochrome P450 enzymes in aging male Dark Agouti rats
CONCLUSIONS: Rat liver cytochrome P450 functions deteriorate with age, which may impair drug metabolism. The TPH2 knockout, which deprives brain serotonin, affects cytochrome P450 expression and activity differently in mature and senescent male rats.PMID:37848703 | DOI:10.1007/s43440-023-00540-x (Source: Pharmacological Reports)
