Role of the RAAS in mediating the pathophysiology of COVID-19
Pharmacol Rep. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.1007/s43440-024-00596-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) holds a position of paramount importance as enzymatic and endocrine homeostatic regulator concerning the water-electrolyte and acid-base balance. Nevertheless, its intricacy is influenced by the presence of various complementary angiotensins and their specific receptors, thereby modifying the primary RAAS actions. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) acts as a surface receptor for SARS-CoV-2, establishing an essential connection between RAAS and COVID-19 infection. Despite the recurri...

The impact of excessive maternal weight on the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders in offspring-a narrative review of clinical studies
Pharmacol Rep. 2024 Apr 22. doi: 10.1007/s43440-024-00598-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe global prevalence of overweight and obesity is a significant public health concern that also largely affects women of childbearing age. Human epidemiological studies indicate that prenatal exposure to excessive maternal weight or excessive gestational weight gain is linked to various neurodevelopmental disorders in children, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, internalizing and externalizing problems, schizophrenia, and cognitive/intellectual impairment. Considering that inadequate matern...

Mechanistic correlation of molecular pathways in obesity-mediated stroke pathogenesis
Pharmacol Rep. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1007/s43440-024-00590-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTObesity, a prominent risk factor for the development of heart attacks and several cardiovascular ailments. Obesity ranks as the second most significant avoidable contributor to mortality, whereas stroke stands as the second leading cause of death on a global scale. While changes in lifestyle have been demonstrated to have significant impacts on weight management, the long-term weight loss remains challenging, and the global prevalence of obesity continues to rise. The pathophysiology of obesity has been extensively studied during the...

Pharmacokinetic interaction between regorafenib and atorvastatin in rats
CONCLUSIONS: This animal model study showed a significant pharmacokinetic interaction between regorafenib and atorvastatin. While this interaction may be clinically significant, this needs to be confirmed in clinical trials involving cancer patients.PMID:38632186 | DOI:10.1007/s43440-024-00570-z (Source: Pharmacological Reports)

Partial mGlu < sub > 5 < /sub > receptor NAM, M-5MPEP, induces rapid and sustained antidepressant-like effects in the BDNF-dependent mechanism and enhances (R)-ketamine action in mice
CONCLUSION: Partial mGlu5 receptor NAM, M-5MPEP, induced rapid and sustained antidepressant-like effects in the BDNF-dependent mechanism and enhanced (R)-ketamine action in mice, indicating both substances' convergent mechanisms of action and the possibility of their practical use in treating depression as RAAD.PMID:38632187 | DOI:10.1007/s43440-024-00588-3 (Source: Pharmacological Reports)

Extracellular acidification reveals the antiarrhythmic properties of amiodarone related to late sodium current-induced atrial arrhythmia
CONCLUSION: The pharmacological properties of AMIO concerning healthy rat atrial tissue are not dependent on pHe. However, the prevention of arrhythmias induced by INa-Late is pHe-dependent. The development of drugs analogous to AMIO with charge stabilization may help to create more effective drugs to treat arrhythmias related to the INa-Late.PMID:38619735 | DOI:10.1007/s43440-024-00597-2 (Source: Pharmacological Reports)

Pharmacol Rep. 2024 Apr 12. doi: 10.1007/s43440-024-00593-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOral diseases, including periodontal disorders, oral cancer, periodontitis, and mucositis are the major challenges for both patients and healthcare providers. These conditions often involve inflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired cellular processes, leading to symptoms ranging from discomfort to severe debilitation. Conventional treatments for such oral diseases exhibit constraints, prompting the investigation of innovative therapeutic approaches. Considering the anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-cancer effects of melato...
