Mens Preferences for Female Facial Femininity Decline With Age
Discussion. Our study shows that men’s preferences for facial femininity are age dependent. At the proximate level, differences in preferences could reflect age-related declines in testosterone levels. These age-related declines in preferences could benefit older men, who are less able to invest in mating effort, and thus may opt out of competition with younger men for mates with potentially higher fertility. From Noise to Signal: The Age and Social Patterning of Intra-Individual Variability in Late-Life Health
This article reintegrates the systematic study of intra-individual variability back into standard growth curve modeling and investigates the age and social patterning of intra-individual variability in health trajectories. Method. Using panel data from the Health and Retirement Study, we estimate multilevel growth curves of functional limitations and cognitive impairment and examine whether intra-individual variability in these two health outcomes varies by age, gender, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, using level-1 residuals extracted from the adjusted growth curve models. Results. For both outcomes, intra-in...

The Continued Eclipse of Heterogeneity in Gerontological Research
Discussion. Consistent with earlier reports of studies, researchers continue to focus on average differences between age groups, yet key issues in social gerontology require attention to intra-age variability. (Source: Journals of Gerontology: Series B Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences)

Disability Rises Gradually for a Cohort of Older Americans
Discussion: As a cohort ages, average disability among living members increases gradually, signaling behavioral, psychological, and biological fitness in very old persons. (Source: Journals of Gerontology: Series B Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences)

Ethnic Disparities in the Onset and Progression of Functional Limitations Among Israeli Middle-Aged and Older Adults: Socioeconomic and Health-Related Pathways
Conclusions: Our findings suggest the importance of moving beyond traditional indicators of socioeconomic status and health-related pathways to fully understand the underlying factors that predict ethnic disparities in the onset and progression of functional limitations in Israel. Foundations of Activity of Daily Living Trajectories of Older Americans
This article assesses the extent to which early phases of the process are associated with individual-level disability trajectories by age. Method. We use data from seven waves of the Health and Retirement Study, 1998 to 2010, to investigate for individuals aged 65–84 years how baseline sociodemographic characteristics and self-reported disease, pain, and functional limitation (physical, cognitive, or sensory) are related to the dynamics of limitations in activities of daily living (ADLs). Our modeling approach jointly estimates multiperiod trajectories of ADL limitation and mortality and yields estimates of the numb...

Loneliness and Cognitive Function in Older Adults: Findings From the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey
Discussion: Loneliness may predict subsequent cognitive decline, and vice versa. This loneliness–cognition relationship is partially explained by their impact on physical health. Multidisciplinary interventions aimed at reducing loneliness and cognitive decline per se and their associated risk factors as well as improving chronic illness management would be beneficial for emotional well-being and cognitive health in OAs. Translation and Validation of the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale Among Older Migrants Living in the Netherlands
Conclusions. The results provide sufficient support for use of the translated version of the 11-item DJGLS among Turkish and Moroccan older migrants and use of the Dutch version for Surinamese older migrants as a reliable and valid measure of loneliness. Fit of latent structural models varied between good and poor. Further research is needed to investigate ethnic differences in levels and determinants of loneliness. Age-Related Increases in Verbal Knowledge Are Not Associated With Word Finding Problems in the Cam-CAN Cohort: What You Know Wont Hurt You
Discussion: These results do not support the hypothesis that lifelong knowledge acquisition leads to interference that causes an age-related increase in TOTs. Instead, crystallized intelligence supports successful word retrieval, although this relationship weakens across adulthood. The Roles for Prior Visual Experience and Age on the Extraction of Egocentric Distance
Discussion: The results suggest that observers store contextual information gained from longer viewing durations to aid in the perception of distance at brief glimpses, and that this memory becomes more important with age. Theories of Memory and Aging: A Look at the Past and a Glimpse of the Future
The present article reviews theories of memory and aging over the past 50 years. Particularly notable is a progression from early single-mechanism perspectives to complex multifactorial models proposed to account for commonly observed age deficits in memory function. The seminal mechanistic theories of processing speed, limited resources, and inhibitory deficits are discussed and viewed as especially important theories for understanding age-related memory decline. Additionally, advances in multivariate techniques including structural equation modeling provided new tools that led to the development of more complex multifact...

Cognitive Aging in a Social and Affective Context: Advances Over the Past 50 Years
Discussion: Socioaffective domains may preserve function within cognitive domains in part because socioaffective processing provides a rich source of environmental support and links to motivated cognition. Speed of Visual Search in Old Age: 1950 to 2016
Discussion: Models for age changes in discrimination between signals and choices of responses have been based on comparisons of speed. The concept of speed has been used in four distinct ways: as a directly measured task performance index, as a hypothetical functional system performance characteristic, as a factor in psychometric models computing mutual variance in calendar age and as a neurophysiological performance characteristic. Since 1950, these measures have, in turn, determined models for speed of perceptual discriminations. Since the 1990s, advances in neuroimaging have not only transformed the data available, but ...
