Ethnic Variation in Lower Face Anthropometry on Facial Computed Tomography Scans for Patients Seeking Facial Feminization Surgery
Facial feminization surgery (FFS) is the most common form of facial gender-affirming surgery. One of the current knowledge gaps is the understanding of racial group differences in baseline craniofacial norms for transgender and nonbinary patients. Response to: “Impact of adjuvant radiochemotherapy on free flap volume in head and neck reconstruction still needs to be further verified”
We greatly appreciate the opportunity to transparently discuss our recently published work in the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.1 Yan Wei and colleagues have raised several interesting concerns regarding our analysis and recommended further validation of our conclusions. We concur that additional, robust studies are indeed necessary to validate our findings. Nonetheless, we are confident that our meta-analysis provides qualitative and significant insights that can be integrated into the clinical decision-making process. Neuromuscular Choristoma-Associated Desmoid-Type Fibromatosis of the Brachial Plexus: Additional Evidence to Support a Nerve-Driven Mechanism
We have recently described circumferential nerve involvement of neuromuscular choristoma associated with desmoid-type fibromatosis (NMC-DTF) in cases involving the sciatic nerve, supporting a nerve-derived mechanism for the DTF. We wondered whether a similar growth pattern occurs in cases involving the brachial plexus (BP). (Source: Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery)

“Impact of Marijuana on Masculinization Top Surgery Postoperative Complications: Single-Surgeon Single-Institutional Experience”
Given recent efforts to legalize and decriminalize recreational marijuana, its use has become increasingly common in patients seeking plastic and reconstructive procedures, including gender affirming surgery.1 Although the use of cannabis has generally been considered lower risk than other recreational substances, recent studies have suggested it may still be associated with an increased surgical complication rate.2 Moreover, individuals undergoing chest wall masculinization may exhibit higher rates of anxiety, depression, and marijuana usage. Genetics Plays an Increasingly Important Role in the Management of Plastic Surgical Patients
Genetics has played an increasingly important role in patient management over recent decades, with innovations improving the care of diseases ranging from breast cancer to sickle cell disease. This is also the case in plastic surgery, where genetics informs patient care and offers promising treatment opportunities (Table 1). Already, plastic surgeons leverage genetic innovations to supplement management decisions for some conditions including craniosynostosis, cleft lip and/or palate, and Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, among others. A novel surgical correction using a combination of wave incision and Z-axis Z-plasty for congenital constriction band syndrome
A congenital constriction band (CCB) is a relatively common anomaly among limb malformations. However, the number of cases treated at a given center is limited and differences in techniques used by surgeons at each facility have a significant impact on treatment outcomes. Several surgical methods have been reported, but a standard technique that yields consistent satisfactory results is still needed. Here, we introduce a novel technique for treatment of CCB syndrome that uses a combination of wave skin incision and Z-axis Z-plasty. Taylor flap (Oblique Rectus Abdominus flap) for perineal reconstruction after abdominoperineal resection. Short and long terms morbidity. A single center series of 140 patients.
Abdominoperineal resection (APR) leads to a substantial loss of tissue and a high rate of complications. The Taylor flap is a musculocutaneous flap that is used in reconstruction after APR.Our objectives were to analyze the short and long-term morbidity of reconstruction with a Taylor flap (Oblique Rectus Abdominus flap) after APR and to identify the risk factors for post-operative complications. Litigation in Gender Affirming Surgery: Reviewing Five Decades of the Medical Malpractice Landscape
The present study sought to analyze malpractice cases related to gender affirming surgery to provide information to physicians as it may serve to minimize the risk of malpractice suits. The Westlaw and Lexis Nexis databases were queried for jury verdicts and settlements related to gender affirming surgery malpractice lawsuits. A total of 26 cases were identified between 1970 and 2020, five of which were determined relevant on further review. Motives included adverse surgical and medical outcomes, and failure to treat. Microsurgical limb reconstruction in the non-concordant patient
Substance misuse is common in patients undergoing limb reconstruction secondary to open fractures and fracture related infection. This group risk breaching the social contract with their treating team through reduced engagement with perioperative care. Potential problems include limited social support, intravenous access, analgesia and withdrawal. These factors may negatively influence the range of treatments offered to this group. We aimed to establish the prevalence and outcomes of the problematically non-concordant cohort in our limb reconstruction population, who we aim to treat equitably even where non-concordance is s...

Revalidating the prognostic relevance of the Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI) - A twenty-year experience examining the performance of the ABSI score in consideration of progression and advantages of burn treatments from a single center in Vienna
The Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI) is a five-variable scale to help evaluate burn severity upon initial assessment. As other studies have been conducted with comparatively small patient populations, the purpose of this study is to revalidate the prognostic relevance of the ABSI in our selected population (N=1193) four decades after its introduction considering the progress in the treatment of severe burn injuries over the past decades. In addition, we evaluate whether comorbidities have an influence on the survival probability of severely burned patients. (Source: Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery)

Congenital midline cervical cleft: Management of a case series and literature review
Congenital cervical cleft of the midline is a rare anomaly classified as a malformation of the branchial arches and represents less than 2% of congenital cervical malformations. Its clinical presentation involves cervical midline deformities: cephalic nodular lesion, linear groove with atrophic surface and/or caudal sinus. Other midline alterations of variable complexity can also be present. Its treatment should be performed early to avoid long-term complications. Based on the approach of four patients by the authors, a search for the reports published in the last twenty years on the subject in the international literature...

Evaluation of a high fidelity cleft alveolar bone graft simulator
Cleft alveolar bone graft surgery is technically challenging to perform as well as difficult to learn and teach. A high fidelity cleft alveolar bone graft simulator was previously developed. However, further evaluation of the simulator is necessary to assess its efficacy. (Source: Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery)

B-Ultrasound-Assisted Gluteal Fat Grafting in Asians: A Prospective Study of Quantitative Results with Three-Dimensional Imaging and B-Ultrasound Analysis
The increasing number of fatalities caused by gluteal fat grafting is concerning; thus, there is a need to determine ways to obtain the ideal aesthetic effect while ensuring a safe operation. In this paper, three-dimensional (3D) measurements combined with B-ultrasound were used to evaluate the effect of gluteal fat augmentation in Asians, whose safety and effectiveness were confirmed by quantitative data.
