The Similarities and Differences of Nurse-Postoperative Patient Dyads' Attitudes, Social Norms, and Behaviors Regarding Pain and Pain Management
CONCLUSIONS: Nursing education stresses cultural competence, but nurses emphasize "treating all patients the same," which creates a cognitive dissonance, with implications for education. Nurses should conduct a comprehensive pain assessment to inform pain management and nonpharmacologic and complementary therapies should be available on the postoperative unit.PMID:38530678 | DOI:10.1016/j.jopan.2023.12.010 (Source: Journal of Perianesthesia Nursing)

The Similarities and Differences of Nurse-Postoperative Patient Dyads ’ Attitudes, Social Norms, and Behaviors Regarding Pain and Pain Management
Pain is an expected symptom in surgical patients, despite advances in pharmacology, surgical procedures, and perioperative care. The aim of this study was to examine the similarities and differences between nurse-postoperative patient dyads of the same or differing cultures/ethnicities with regard to perceptions, social norms, and behaviors related to pain and pain management. General Anesthesia Exposure in Infancy and Childhood: A 10-year Bibliometric Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Recent research in pediatric anesthesia has focused on mitigating the adverse effects of general anesthesia in infants and young children and studying the pharmacological compatibility of anesthetics. Our study results would assist researchers and clinicians in understanding the current research status and optimizing clinical practice in this field.PMID:38520467 | DOI:10.1016/j.jopan.2023.12.006 (Source: Journal of Perianesthesia Nursing)

Intraoperative Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy: A Case Report
J Perianesth Nurs. 2024 Mar 21:S1089-9472(23)01103-6. doi: 10.1016/j.jopan.2023.12.014. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTakotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) is a rare condition associated with transient akinesia of apical segments and hyperkinesia of basal segments of the heart. Although several mechanisms have been proposed to cause direct and indirect myocardial damage owing to catecholamine excess, the underlying pathophysiology remains unknown. An 18-year-old female was referred to our otorhinolaryngology outpatient clinic for a septorhinoplasty. Apart from the fear of surgery, the patient had no other health issues. After the...

Perioperative Health Care Professionals' Knowledge of Evidence-Based Inadvertent Perioperative Hypothermia Management
CONCLUSIONS: The knowledge of the health care professionals working in the perioperative process about evidence-based practices related to inadvertent perioperative hypothermia management was determined to be moderate. We recommend increasing the level of knowledge of health care professionals by providing education on guidelines regarding inadvertent perioperative hypothermia management.PMID:38520469 | DOI:10.1016/j.jopan.2023.12.009 (Source: Journal of Perianesthesia Nursing)

Comparison of Conventional Anesthesia Nurse Education and an Artificial Intelligence Chatbot (ChatGPT) Intervention on Preoperative Anxiety: A Randomized Controlled Trial
CONCLUSIONS: The ChatGPT intervention significantly reduced preoperative anxiety compared with the control group; however, no overall difference in the STAI scores was observed. The mixed secondary endpoint results highlight the need for refining chatbot algorithms and knowledge bases to improve performance and satisfaction. AI chatbots should complement, rather than replace, human health care providers. Seamless integration and effective communication among AI chatbots, patients, and health care providers are essential for optimizing patient outcomes.PMID:38520470 | DOI:10.1016/j.jopan.2023.12.005 (Source: Journal of Perianesthesia Nursing)
