Azilsartan improves doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity via inhibiting oxidative stress, proinflammatory pathway, and apoptosis
This study investigated whether azilsartan could mitigate doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. We divided 28 male rats into four groups: the control group receiving a standard diet and water, the vehicle group given DMSO orally for two weeks, doxorubicin group receiving 2.5 mg/kg of doxorubicin three times a week for two weeks, and azilsartan group treated with 5 mg/kg/day of azilsartan orally and doxorubicin. Doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity was evidenced by a significant increase in TNF-α, IL-1β, MDA, and caspase-3 levels and significantly decreased TAC and Bcl-2 levels in the cardiac tissues of treated rats compared ...

Add-on treatment with Cerebrolysin improves clinical symptoms in patients with ALS: results from a prospective, single-center, placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, phase II study
J Med Life. 2023 Dec;16(12):1750-1755. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0459.ABSTRACTAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating and progressive neurodegenerative disease with limited treatment options available. Cerebrolysin is a drug candidate for the treatment of ALS because of its neuroprotective and neuroregenerative effects. We initiated a pilot clinical study of a combination of Cerebrolysin and riluzole to assess the therapeutic benefit of Cerebrolysin as an add-on treatment on clinical signs and symptoms in outpatients with ALS. Twenty patients with a clinically definitive diagnosis of ALS were enrolled and randoml...

Disability inclusion assessment in primary healthcare centers in Eastern Saudi Arabia: a way forward
This study aimed to identify challenges related to accessibility in infrastructure, services, equipment, processes, and training in primary healthcare settings. The study was conducted in Dammam, AlKhobar, and AlQatif in August 2022, using an analytical, quantitative cross-sectional approach. A total of 56 primary healthcare centers (PHCs) were assessed across multiple domains. Government-built PHCs had an average accessibility rate of 83.2%, while those located in rented buildings scored an average of 67.1%. One domain that scored highly among both building types was the clinic rooms domain, with an average score of 90%. ...

Immediate and localized effect of Kinesio tape on the hand grip strength of sedentary female adults
J Med Life. 2023 Dec;16(12):1776-1782. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0333.ABSTRACTThe current study aimed to assess the immediate and localized effect of Kinesio Taping (KT) on hand grip strength. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 60 sedentary female university students (aged 18-23) divided into two groups of 30 subjects each. The experimental group received KT with 50% tension of the tape on the forearm and 100% tension on the hand, and the control group received a placebo application of KT (KT without tension on the hand and forearm). Hand grip strength was assessed before and immediately after applying KT using a hand-h...

Dentists' attitudes and prescription practices for analgesics and antibiotics in Kirkuk Governorate, Iraq
This study aimed to assess the prescribing patterns of analgesics and antibiotics by dentists in Kirkuk City, Iraq, focusing on their attitudes, knowledge levels, and practices regarding these medications. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 280 dentists in Kirkuk City. The dentists were contacted via their work email addresses, and they responded to a survey. Descriptive statistics, including frequency analysis, were employed to evaluate the appropriateness of analgesic and antibiotic prescriptions for different dental conditions. The first-choice analgesic for 44.6% of dentists was mefenamic acid, followed by pa...

Comparison of immediate versus post-stenting ureteroscopy for ureteral stones treatment
J Med Life. 2023 Dec;16(12):1745-1749. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0199.ABSTRACTUreteroscopy is a highly effective treatment for ureteral stones, characterized by a high stone-free rate and a low need for re-treatment. Ureteral stent placement can improve the insertion of the ureteral access sheath and ureteroscope but may be associated with higher morbidity prior to and after ureteroscopy. The study aimed to compare immediate versus post-stenting ureteroscopy for ureteral stone treatment in terms of operative time, intra- and post-operative complications, length of hospital stay, and stone-free rate. This prospective study inv...

Improving caregiver preparedness in the care transition of stroke patients: a scoping review
J Med Life. 2023 Dec;16(12):1723-1731. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0142.ABSTRACTStroke is a life-threatening condition caused by the rupture of a brain blood vessel, potentially causing brain damage within minutes, severe disability, and even death. After initial hospitalization and rehabilitation, most stroke survivors return home, relying on their family members as caregivers for activities of daily living and treatments. This scoping review aimed to evaluate caregivers' readiness for transitioning stroke patient care to a home environment. We conducted a comprehensive search on Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Schol...

Cardamonin mitigates kidney injury by modulating inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptotic signaling in rats subjected to renal ischemia and reperfusion
J Med Life. 2023 Dec;16(12):1852-1856. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0093.ABSTRACTRenal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a critical health concern that aggravates the pathophysiology of acute kidney injury (AKI), leading to high mortality rates in intensive care units. Cardamonin is a natural compound with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The current study aimed to evaluate the renoprotective impact of cardamonin against AKI induced by renal IRI. Male rats (n=5 per group) were divided into four groups: the sham group underwent anesthesia and abdominal incision only; the control group experienced bilateral renal a...

This study aimed to design, synthesize, and evaluate the cytotoxic activity of novel thiazole-sulfanilamide derivatives, specifically compounds M3, M4, and M5, through molecular docking and biological assays. The synthesis utilized essential chemical compounds, including sulfanilamide, chloro-acetyl chloride, thiourea, derivatives of benzaldehyde, and silver nitrate. The docking study was carried out using Molecular Operating Environment (MOE) software, and cytotoxic activity was predicted by MTT assay. The synthesized compounds demonstrated a reduction in the viability of cancer cells. Compound M5 had an IC50 of 18.53 µg...

J Med Life. 2023 Dec;16(12):1839-1843. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0212.ABSTRACTDevelopmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is commonly addressed through surgical intervention, usually performed in a specialized tertiary care facility. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surgical outcomes in patients with DDH who had open reduction alone or in conjunction with bone surgery at our facility. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with DDH, categorizing them into two groups: Group OR underwent open reduction (OR) alone, and group ORBO underwent OR in conjunction with femoral or pelvic osteotomies. The m...

Functional capacity in smoking patients after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery: a quasi-experimental study
J Med Life. 2023 Dec;16(12):1760-1768. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0282.ABSTRACTCoronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG) is an important approach to treating coronary heart disease. However, patients undergoing open heart surgery are at risk of postoperative complications. Cigarette smoking is one of the preoperative risk factors that may increase postoperative complications. Studies show that early mobilization intervention may reduce these complications and improve functional capacity, but the impact of smoking on early outcomes after CABG has been controversial for the past two decades. This quasi-experimental study ex...
