Tackling Dementia: A Systematic Review of Interventions Based on Physical Activity
Conclusions: Physical activity interventions have a positive impact on physical function, mobility, and activities of daily living. However, the available evidence is insufficient to support the conclusion that physical activity improves cognitive function of older people with dementia. Kinesiophobia and Fear Avoidance in Older Adults: A Systematic Review on Constructs and Related Measures
Conclusion: This review identified a large diversity in the constructs and instruments used to study kinesiophobia and FA among older adults. Some constructs are used interchangeably although they do not share the same conceptual definition. There is poor standardization in the use of assessment tools in accordance with the construct under study. Clinical evaluation and study results can be biased owing to this ambiguity. Factors Affecting Engagement of Older Adults in Exercise Following Hospitalization
Conclusion: Older adults have low levels of engagement in exercise that might impact their recovery after hospitalization. During exercise prescription, clinicians should prioritize older adults who live alone, who have lower functional ability, and no previous habit of exercising. The Inventory of Physical Activity Barriers for Community-Dwelling Adults 50 Years of Age and Older: Development and Preliminary Validation
Conclusion: Our preliminary results suggest that the IPAB is valid and reliable. Using the IPAB, health care providers will be able to identify patients' PA barriers and thus develop individualized PA prescriptions, an evidence-based method of increasing PA. Wellness Aging Model Related to Inactivity, Illness, and Injury (WAMI-3): A Tool to Encourage Prevention in Practice
This article introduces the Wellness Aging Model related to Inactivity, Illness, and Injury (WAMI-3) as a simple visual tool to educate patients on the importance of PA and exercise for primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. As a clinical construct, the WAMI-3 can be applied to all body systems affected by aging, inactivity, illness, and/or injury and exemplifies the concept of Exercise is Medicine®. The WAMI-3 framework is intended for easy integration into clinical practice; a clinician-friendly resource, based on health promotion, is provided to serve as a catalyst for enhancing the patient interview and educatio...

Physical Therapy and Health Care Utilization for Older Adults With Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
Conclusions: Fewer than 2% of Medicare beneficiaries received PT within 30 days of initial LSS diagnosis. Receipt of PT was associated with less utilization of higher risk and costly health services for 1 year. These results may inform practitioners when making early decisions about rehabilitative care for older adults with LSS. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy)

Mobility Limitation in Older Adults Residing in Nursing Homes in Brazil Associated With Advanced Age and Poor Nutritional Status: An Observational Study
This study aims to determine the prevalence and factors associated with mobility limitation in older adults residing in nursing homes. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 305 older adults (≥60 years) residing in 10 nursing homes in Northeast Brazil. Mobility limitation was evaluated using the “walking” item of the Barthel index. Sociodemographic/economic data concerning the participants and institutions, as well as conditions that could influence the mobility state of the older adults, were collected. The χ2 test and multiple logistic regression were performed using a significance level of 5%....

Older Adults' Perceptions Regarding the Role of Physical Therapists in Fall Prevention: A Qualitative Investigation
Conclusion: Older adults lack awareness about the role of physical therapists for fall prevention, believing they should only seek treatment from a physical therapist to address a specific problem, or after a fall. The profession should consider addressing misconceptions and underutilization by educating the public that physical therapists can and do play an important role in the prevention of falls. Being explicit about the prevention of falls throughout an older adults' episode of care may further help reinforce the role of physical therapists for fall prevention and improve dissemination of this knowledge. Rapid Inhibition Accuracy and Leg Strength Are Required for Community-Dwelling Older People to Recover Balance From Induced Trips and Slips: An Experimental Prospective Study
Conclusion: Our findings suggest rapid inhibition accuracy and adequate leg strength are required for older adults to recover balance from trips and slips. The mechanisms for balance recovery during daily life activities are likely different from those for static balance, suggesting the need for task-specific assessments and interventions for fall prevention in older adults.
