Diagnostic Accuracy of Bronchoscopy Procedures: Definitions, Pearls, and Pitfalls
The field of diagnostic bronchoscopy has developed at an accelerated pace. Certain limitations have plagued the evaluation of advanced bronchoscopy techniques, including the use of inconsistently defined measures of diagnostic accuracy, and confusion around the definition of “diagnostic yield.” This methodological review outlines standard measures of diagnostic accuracy and highlights how these differ from “diagnostic yield.” We draw examples from the interventional bronchoscopy literature to illustrate key concepts and potential pitfalls. Incidence and Nature of Respiratory Events in Patients Undergoing Bronchoscopy Under Conscious Sedation
Background: During diagnostic bronchoscopies, conscious sedation improves patient tolerance, but it can contribute to hypercapnia and hypoxia by various mechanisms including depression of ventilatory drive. This prospective study was undertaken to determine the frequency of respiratory events and associated oxygen desaturations during bronchoscopy with conscious sedation. Patients and Methods: The Nox-T3 monitoring system was placed before starting the bronchoscopy and remained in place for 30 minutes following the procedure. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of obstructive and central apneic events during...

Airway Amyloidosis: A Retrospective Analysis of 43 Patients
Conclusion: Computed tomography of the chest, bronchoscopy, and biopsy are needed to establish the diagnosis of airway amyloidosis, and systemic amyloidosis should be ruled out. Treatment of amyloidosis requires a multidisciplinary approach. (Source: Journal of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology)

Utility of Functional Pneumonectomy by Using Intrabronchial Valves: First Case Series and Single Center Experience
Conclusion: PAL usually occurs in patients with severe underlying lung condition or after surgery. Management of PAL can be challenging despite pleurodesis (medical or surgical). BFP offers a minimally invasive management option. (Source: Journal of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology)
