We report two cases of this entity: a 37-year-old female patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and an elderly woman with Crohn ’ s disease. These are two chronic autoimmune inflammatory diseases that can be uncommonly related to acute pancreatitis and that culminates in PP. We also provide a brief review of the treatment, diagnosis and morphology of the lesions, as well as the pathophysiology of the disease. The importance of histopathological analysis of lesion biopsies is highlighted as an important diagnostic tool.RESUMEN La paniculitis pancre ática (PP) es una manifestación rara de enfermedad pancreática...

This study describes the case of a patient who developed myoepithelial carcinoma in the right thigh, affecting deep tissues, which were conducted as indicated in the current literature, however, presenting an unfavorable outcome. The available information comes from few studies; therefore, we emphasize the importance of gathering data on the subject, which are still scarce.RESUMEN El carcinoma mioepitelial es una neoplasia rara, de manifestaci ón muy heterogénea, que encierra un gran desafío para la adopción de criterios pronósticos categóricos, puesto que, a pesar de ser clasificado como tumor de bajo grado de malig...

Evaluation of the influence of pre-analytical factors on total testosterone levels in healthy young men
Conclusion: It is recommended that clinical laboratories standardize the collection of total testosterone by performing the test in the morning and after an eight-hour fast, in order to reduce variability and ensure reliability in the results.RESUMEN Introducci ón: La testosterona es la principal hormona reguladora de funciones reproductoras masculinas, participando directamente en la espermatogénesis y en el aumento de la actividad sexual. La medición sanguínea de esa hormona es fundamental en el diagnóstico de trastornos neuroendocrinos, como el hi pogonadismo. Sin embargo, hay poca estandarización en la prepara...

CRISP3 glycoprotein: a good biomarker for prostate cancer?
Conclusion: CRISP3 is expressed in prostate cancer at different levels. Nuevos biomarcadores so...

The combination of mammaglobin A and TWIST-1 increases detection of circulating tumor cells in breast cancer
Conclusion: Combined analysis of TWIST-1 and MGA increased the sensitivity of CTCs detection compared to the single analysis of each gene. The detection of CTCs was not associated with known prognostic factors, suggesting that it is able to provide clinical information in addition to routine breast cancer clinicopathological parameters.RESUMEN Objetivos: Las c élulas de cáncer de mama liberadas al torrente sanguíneo se llaman células tumorales circulantes (CTCs). Las CTCs pueden expresar diferentes genes, como TWIST-1 y mamaglobina A (MGA). Los objetivos de este estudio fueron analizar la expresión de TWIST-1 y MGA...

The importance of flow cytometry in the diagnosis and monitoring of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria
Conclusion: The immunophenotyping exam with flow cytometry is considered the reference test for PNH diagnosis, since the technique is highly sensitive and specific, presenting advantages as the quantitative identification of small populations of cells with PNH phenotype and the capacity to distinguish cells with partial or total deficiency of GPI-anchored proteins.RESUMEN Introducci ón: La hemoglobinuria paroxística nocturna (HPN) es una enfermedad clonal adquirida de células madre hematopoyéticas; se caracteriza clínicamente por hemólisis intravascular crónica, insuficiencia medular e hipercoagulabilidad, que co...

Hereditary hemochromatosis associated with the development of liver cirrhosis
ABSTRACT Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is an autosomal recessive disease, most often associated with mutations in the HFE gene, which result in continuous absorption of iron, causing its overload. Liver tissue is the main site of iron deposition; thus, high levels of iron, when interacting with oxygen, induce the formation of free radicals that will act on proteins, lipids, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which may trigger deleterious effects at cellular and tissue levels. In order to elucidate the development and progression of liver cirrhosis due to iron overload, the purpose of this study is to describe the pathophys...

Primary cutaneous diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, leg type: case report
ABSTRACT The report describes the clinic of an aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma, primary cutaneous diffuse large-B cell lymphoma, leg type (PCDLBCL-LT), and shows its relevance for addressing the case of a rare lymphoma, with complex diagnosis and, in most cases, late as there are few studies reported on the subject. Since it is an aggressive pathology, it is essential to have the dissemination of knowledge to assist in the early diagnosis of the disease and, consequently, in the choice of a more effective treatment. Therefore, we seek to demonstrate the main clinical characteristics, as well as the diagnostic approach, sta...

ABSTRACT The umbilical cord constriction (UCC) is an uncommon condition and an important etiology for stillborn fetuses. The main goal of this study was to verify the UCC occurrence as the cause of intrauterine fetal death, the associated etiology and its pathological characteristics. Therefore, a descriptive retrospective cross-sectional study was developed using the database from a Pathology Institute, in Brazil, from 1995 to 2017. The results presented a total of 1,359 embryo/fetus deaths – 69 (5.07%) due to UCC, 60.9% males and 39.1% females. The average age of pregnant women was 27.5 years ± 7.2 years of standard ...
