Melanoma of the eye: Preclinical tests show path toward treatment
(University of Alabama at Birmingham) A preclinical study offers hope for treatment of uveal melanoma, a rare and deadly cancer of the eye. A small molecule inhibitor has been identified that dampens the potent drivers of this tumor. In mouse models, the inhibitor strongly limited primary disease in the eye and metastatic tumor dissemination to the liver, and animals survived longer, without overt side effects. Study shows Cannabis terpenes provide pain relief, contribute to 'entourage effect'
(University of Arizona Health Sciences) Researchers in the University of Arizona Health Sciences Comprehensive Pain and Addiction Center have found that terpenes mimic cannabinoids and produce similar pain-relieving effects, which are amplified when the two are used together. Financial barriers fell for some cancer survivors after Affordable Care Act
(Michigan Medicine - University of Michigan) Cancer survivors ages 18 to 64 faced fewer financial barriers to health care after the Affordable Care Act was implemented than they did before the landmark law took effect, University of Michigan researchers found. In fact, they believe the ACA helped the financial burden (problems related to the cost of medical care) for younger cancer survivors fall to its lowest estimated levels in 20 years. CNIO researchers discover a new pathway to tackle follicular lymphoma
(Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncol รณ gicas (CNIO)) The team led by Alejo Efeyan, head of the Metabolism and Cell Signalling Group at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), has discovered that genetic inhibition of the RagC protein blocks the activation of B lymphocytes and delays the onset of follicular lymphomas without side effects. The study, which was carried out in animal models, was published this week in the journal Cell Reports. (Source: EurekAlert! - Cancer)

Scientists discover nanoclusters effective for cancer in the second near-infrared synergy therapy
(Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences) As a minimally invasive method for cancer therapy at precise locations, NIR-induced photothermal therapy (PTT) has drawn extensively attention. The therapeutic mechanism is the use of photothermal agents (PTAs) in the treatment of tumors, and its therapeutic effect happens only at the tumor site where both light-absorbent and localized laser radiation coexist. WVU researcher leads effort to reduce data-transfer error in radiation therapy
(West Virginia University) As the complexity of radiation therapy has grown, so too has the amount of data that goes into treatment machines. With more data comes more opportunity for errors in data transfer. Ramon Alfredo Siochi--WVU's director of medical physics--is working to make those errors less likely. (Source: EurekAlert! - Cancer)

Preventing lung cancer's unwelcome return
(Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory) Approximately 15% of lung cancer tumors are caused by a mutation in a growth receptor called EGFR. An effective drug can kill most of the cancer cells, but the tumor eventually grows back. CSHL Visiting Scientist Raffaella Sordella and her team investigated the molecular mechanisms behind this relapse. They discovered that some of the cells were resistant to the EGFR treatment; they survived using a parallel pathway. (Source: EurekAlert! - Cancer)
