Researchers discover how cowpea mosaic plant virus activates immune system against cancer
(Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center) Cowpea mosaic virus, when injected into cancerous tumors, stimulates the immune system to attack and often eliminate the tumor. In a new study, immunology researchers in Dartmouth's and Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Norris Cotton Cancer Center, in collaboration with researchers at the University of California San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering, characterize the previously unidentified pathways through which CPMV is recognized by the immune system, opening the door for pursuit of CPMV as a new biological cancer treatment. Hospitalized individuals with active cancer more likely to die from COVID-19
(Wiley) New research indicates that patients hospitalized with active cancer were more likely to die from COVID-19 than those with a history of cancer or those without any cancer diagnosis. The findings published by Wiley early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, also indicate those with active blood cancers have the greatest risk of death due to COVID-19. Regulation of protein homeostasis by cardiac glycosides
(Nagoya City University) The unfolded protein response (UPR) is a pivotal mechanism to mitigate protein homeostasis through transcriptional or translational control. On the other hand, since dysregulation of UPR has been associated with various human diseases, the compounds modulating UPR can clarify the pathological significance of the UPR. Newly approved drug effective against lung cancer caused by genetic mutation
(Washington University School of Medicine) The new drug sotorasib reduces tumor size and shows promise in improving survival among patients with lung tumors caused by a specific DNA mutation, according to results of a global phase 2 clinical trial led by Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The drug is designed to shut down the effects of the mutation, which is found in about 13% of patients with lung adenocarcinoma, a common type of non-small-cell lung cancer. Study finds lower mortality rate for men at high risk for death from prostate cancer who received early postoperative radiation therapy
(Brigham and Women's Hospital) A new, retrospective study focuses on men who have both high-grade prostate cancer that extends outside the prostate and/or has spread into the lymph nodes. For these men who are at high risk of dying from the disease, there was a significant reduction in the risk of death with adjuvant radiation therapy (aRT) use, suggesting that it should be offered to these men.
