Recurrent Peritonsillar Abscess Caused by Vaginal Flora: A Common Problem From a Unique Source
We present a case of recurrent PTA with G. vaginalis superinfection, which occurred after the patient performed oral sex on a female after incision and drainage of her initial PTA. The patient continued to have recurrent PTAs until G. vaginalis was identified, and antibiotic coverage was broadened to cover both group A Streptococcus and G. vaginalis. This case highlights the importance of culturing PTA aspirate for directed antibiosis in persistent or recurrent infections. The rare superinfection also raises the question of advising abstinence from oral-genital contact after oral procedures to minimize risk of superinfecti...

Treatment of Warthin's Tumors of the Parotid Gland With Radiofrequency Ablation: A Systematic Review of the Current Literature
Conclusion: This study suggests that RFA is an alternative to parotidectomy for the symptomatic treatment of Warthin's tumors. RFA procedures demonstrated substantial tumor size reduction with few complications. However, further meta-analysis and comparison with alternative treatments is warranted to establish RFA's role in treatment of Warthin's tumors. The study is limited by its reliance on only 2 databases and a lack of comprehensive examination of different RFA settings.PMID:38647239 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241248119 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Unusual Case of Esophageal Foreign Body: A Whole Mantis Shrimp
This article presents an extremely rare case of an esophageal FB, where a 44-year-old man accidentally ingested an entire mantis shrimp while sucking its flavored tail, and was sent to the emergency department for severe throat pain and difficulty breathing. We immediately performed a laryngoscopy that revealed the FB that obstructs the entrance of the esophagus, obstructing the glottis due to the long shape of the shrimp. The mantis shrimp had barbs on its shell and trying to remove it intact would cause significant damage to the pharyngeal mucosa. Therefore, we extracted the mantis shrimp in segments under general anesth...

Regression of Endolymphatic Hydrops in Patient With Meniere's Disease Treated With Vestibular Neurectomy: A Case Report
Ear Nose Throat J. 2024 Apr 20:1455613241238633. doi: 10.1177/01455613241238633. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVestibular neurectomy is an effective method eliminating vertigo attacks in patients suffering from disabling Meniere's disease with no clinical improvement despite conservative and intratympanic therapy. Magnetic resonance imaging allows in vivo evaluation of changes manifesting in the inner ear after treatment; however, downgrading of the endolymphatic hydrops after vestibular neurectomy had not been previously described in the literature. In the present article, a case of a patient with unilateral severe Menier...

Challenges in Diagnosing and Treating Subperiosteal Orbital Hematoma Secondary to Sinusitis: A Case
Ear Nose Throat J. 2024 Apr 18:1455613241247764. doi: 10.1177/01455613241247764. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSubperiosteal orbital hematoma secondary to sinusitis is rare. Thus far, 19 cases of this disease have been reported, of which none involved postoperative skin anesthesia in the region innervated by the supraorbital nerve. In this article, for the first time we report a case of subperiosteal orbital hematoma secondary to sinusitis with skin anesthesia in the area innervated by the supraorbital nerve after surgery.PMID:38634313 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241247764 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Endoscopic Broad Palisade Cartilage Graft Without Raising a Tympanomeatal Flap in the Repair of Subtotal Perforation
Conclusions: In the repair of subtotal perforation, an endoscopic broad palisade cartilage graft, performed without raising a tympanomeatal flap, is simple and feasible, resulting in a high graft success rate and good hearing restoration.PMID:38634317 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241249030 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Solitary Isolated Oropharyngeal Neurofibroma Presenting With Dysphagia in the Setting of Von Recklinghausen's Disease
Ear Nose Throat J. 2024 Apr 18:1455613241249022. doi: 10.1177/01455613241249022. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 24-year-old man with von Recklinghausen's disease presented with complaints of difficulty in swallowing for 6 months and change of voice for 3 months. He also had recent-onset difficulty in breathing. Telelaryngoscopy and subsequent contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan revealed a well-defined, smooth submucosal mass in the oropharynx (attached to the posterior pharyngeal wall, superior to the level of left aryepiglottic fold), obscuring the ipsilateral pyriform fossa, and nearly blocking the pharyngeal lum...

Solitary Bone Plasmacytoma of the Skull Base With an Unusual Presentation
We present the case of a 61-year-old man with an unusual presentation of hoarseness secondary to vocal fold palsy. Imaging showed a large bony lesion in the temporo-occipital region with involvement of the jugular foramen. Further detailed diagnostic procedures confirmed SBP of the skull base. Radiotherapy was given with an uneventful recovery of vocal fold function. Skull base plasmacytoma can be considered as a differential diagnosis of causes of unilateral vocal fold palsy. Early therapeutic management may improve vocal fold function.PMID:38634321 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241249039 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Ethmoid Osteoblastoma: A Case Report and Pooled Analysis of Cases
We present a case of osteoblastoma in a 13-year-old boy affecting the ethmoid sinus, which manifested as exophthalmos. A computed tomography scan revealed an expansive lesion in the right ethmoid sinus, causing compression and displacement of the orbital contents to the right. The lesion exhibited a mix of ground glass opacity and dense bone. On magnetic resonance imaging, the less dense areas of the tumor showed strong enhancement, while the densely sclerotic regions appeared as signal voids on all imaging sequences. A combined transorbital and transnasal approach was performed to remove the tumor. Histologically, the tum...
