Advancements in Stem Cell Use
It is well known that stem cells found in a newborn baby’s cord blood are rich in (hematopoietic) stem cells, which has been used to treat and cure over 80 different blood and immune disorders and cancers. But what about the stem cells from umbilical cord tissue? Both Cord blood and Cord Tissue are rich in what is generally known as Perinatal Stem Cells. Based on their origin, perinatal stem cells can be divided into three groups: stem cells from amniotic fluid, placenta and umbilical cord. Umbilical Cord Tissue is rich in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). These stem cells are found within the Wharton’s Jelly that fills t...

First Woman Cured of HIV Using Cord Blood Stem Cells
A woman of mixed race becomes the third patient in the world to be cured of HIV, and the first one to do it using a cord blood stem cell transplant. On Tuesday February 15th, the case was presented at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections. She received a combination of adult bone marrow and umbilical cord stem cells that contained a CCR5 gene mutation, which has been known to provide immunity against HIV. Using cord blood in this case meant that the patient only needed to be a partial genetic match, which means that it will be a treatment that can be made available to a more genetically diverse patien...

How has COVID impacted Pregnancy Rates?
Speculation has been as much a part of the COVID pandemic as isolation, tv show reunions, endless deliveries of Chipotle, eye glass fog and Zoom fatigue. Since most of us have never lived through anything like this, we naturally wonder about our futures. What will work environments look like, what kind of protections will be developed, what can be done about health care inequity and how do we fix the damned supply chain issues? One particular area of societal interest was and continues to be the birth rate, here and around the globe. After all, history tells us that the number of babies born reflect the times in which we ...

Considering Homebirth? Here s One Woman s Story
Experiencing Homebirths Homebirths are traditionally attended by two midwives, but I also hired a doula (birth coach). Most midwives only take a few clients per month which enables them to really get to know their clients. Each appointment was centered around getting to know me, and my other two children (I had to bring them to most appointments), answering any questions I had and asking how I was feeling. I was grateful I could bring my other two children because many other OB/GYN practices were not allowing women to bring anyone else to their appointments during COVID. Each appointment lasted about an hour. How To Prep...

COVID-19 Vaccine & Pregnancy
The coronavirus pandemic has had long lasting implications for everyone worldwide. For those pregnant, attempting pregnancy, or pursuing fertility treatment, there are many new questions to be considered, and answers can vary by region and situation. The vaccines available in the US for protection against the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19- produced by Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson, have not been specifically tested for safety in pregnancy. For drug trials to deliberately include pregnant women is ethically complicated, as we want to avoid any remote possibility of causing harm to the pregnancy or the i...

In times like these
“Pandemic babies.” If you’re a mom that’s given birth any time within the last year, you may either use this term for your little one freely or shudder viscerally at the expression. The postpartum stage is challenging enough on a great day…when you have all the support your heart desires from the people and providers you need it from the most. COVID 19, on the other hand, has turned our world upside down, hitting new parents with difficulties they never saw coming. Moms and dads literally have had no choice but to fend for themselves as they try to force something (going it alone) that literally flies in the ...
