Biotissue stent for supraciliary outflow in open-angle glaucoma patients: surgical procedure and first clinical results of an aqueous drainage biostent
Conclusion Supraciliary biostenting in OAG patients is well tolerated, has a good safety profile and produces long-term IOP-lowering while reducing glaucoma medication requirements. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Evaluation of the long-term variability of macular OCT/OCTA and visual field parameters
Conclusions VF and macular OCT/OCTA, particularly OCT parameters, showed small long-term variability in all eyes, including stable ones, supporting the use of these instruments in glaucoma follow-up. Changes in macular VD and GCC greater than 4%–5% and 2 µm, respectively, indicate possible progression. Trial registration number NCT00221897. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Effects of socioeconomic status on baseline values and outcomes at 24 months in the Treatment of Advanced Glaucoma Study randomised controlled Trial
Conclusions In patients presenting with advanced glaucoma. SES at baseline is correlated with poorer visual function, poorer Visual Function Questionnaire-25 QoL, ethnicity, age and number visits to an optician in the years preceding diagnosis. SES at baseline does not have an effect of the success of treatment at 24 months. Trial registration number ISRCTN56878850. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Longitudinal change of peripapillary vessel density and retinal nerve fibre layer thickness in normal tension and primary angle closure glaucoma
Conclusions NTG had more extensive and faster rate of pVD loss than PACG. Baseline global pVD and MD were independently associated with the rate of pVD loss in NTG. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Decreased macular deep capillary plexus is associated with functional progression of normal tension glaucoma patients with unilateral visual field loss
Conclusion Decreased DCP was associated with a higher risk of developing VF damage in NTG patients with unilateral VF loss. Assessments of DCP may help improve the evaluation of the risk of functional deterioration in fellow eyes with an initially normal VF. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Intraocular pressure increases the rate of macular vessel density loss in glaucoma
Conclusion IOP metrics were associated with faster rates of overall macular microvascular loss and also in the eyes with peak IOP <18 mm Hg. Future studies are needed to examine whether additional IOP lowering reduces the rate of microvascular loss in patients with glaucoma. Trial registration number NCT00221897. Incidence and epidemiology of conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma in relation to the HIV epidemic in South Africa: a 25-year analysis of the National Cancer Registry (1994-2018)
Conclusion This study highlights the evolving trends and disease burden of CSCC in South Africa. Widespread ART provision is ecologically correlated with declining CSCC rates over the last decade. These findings are in keeping with reported trends for other HIV-related cancers and have important implications for future incidence studies and public health policy. Risk factors for myopia among children and adolescents: an umbrella review of published meta-analyses and systematic reviews
Conclusions We found several risk factors for myopia with different levels of evidence, of which parental myopia presented the strongest association with myopia in children and adolescents. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the association between potential risk factors and myopia among children and adolescents and are important for informing parenting, education, clinical practice guidelines and public health policy. Endophthalmitis rates and risk factors following intraocular surgeries: can we turn big-data benchmarks into patient benefit?
Chen et al present a study exploring postoperative endophthalmitis rates from the US Medicare Population from 2016 to 2019.1 They present postoperative infection rates for a range of intraocular procedures which are potentially very valuable for the process of informed consent, as well as functioning as benchmarks to permit individual departments to audit their own endophthalmitis rates. However, the utility of their estimates for these purposes is dependent on how generalisable the data are felt to be in other settings. Prior to 2006 national surveillance systems, systematic reviews and meta-analyses consistently reported...

At a glance
Incidence and epidemiology of conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma in relation to the HIV epidemic in South Africa: a 25-year analysis of the National Cancer Registry (1994–2018) (see page 175) There have been considerable changes in conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma incidence rates over the course of the HIV epidemic in South Africa. Declining rates coincide with notable changes in the availability of effective antiretroviral therapy. Intraocular pressure increases the rate of macular vessel density loss in glaucoma (see page 181) Peak IOP, mean IOP, and IOP fluctuation are associated with faster rates of microva...

Do adolescents with impaired vision have different intentions and ambitions for their education, career and social outcomes compared to their peers? Findings from the Millennium Cohort Study
Conclusion Adolescents with impaired vision have broadly the same intentions/ambitions regarding future education, careers and social outcomes as their peers with normal vision. The known significant gaps in attainment in these domains among young adults with vision impairment are therefore likely to be due to barriers that they face in achieving their ambitions. Improved implementation of existing interventions is necessary to ensure equality of opportunities. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Does an integrated school eye health delivery model perform better than a vertical model in a real-world setting? A non-randomised interventional comparative implementation study in Zanzibar
Conclusions The IM cohort achieved better reach, effectiveness, adoption rate and implementation performance than the VM cohort. The poor maintenance performance indicators in both arms postfunding call for improvement to the implementation strategy to ensure the sustainability of school eye health. In the optics of scaling up, an integrated approach is recommended. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Prevalence of refractive errors among school-going children in a multistate study in India
Conclusions Refractive error, especially myopia, is common in India. Differences in prevalence between states appear to be driven by literacy rates, suggesting that the burden of myopia may rise as literacy increases. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Ophthalmological outcome of 6.5 years children treated for retinopathy of prematurity: a Swedish register study
Conclusion The results of the present study revealed a high number of eye problems in children treated for ROP, emphasising the need for long-term follow-up. Retreatment of ROP was a risk factor for VI, and emphasises the importance of an accurate first treatment for the long-term ophthalmological outcome. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Likelihood of germline mutation with solitary retinoblastoma based on tumour location at presentation
Conclusions Among patients with solitary unilateral retinoblastoma, those presenting with macular tumour (compared with extramacular tumour) show 2.18 times greater likelihood for germline mutation and an even higher likelihood of development of subsequent tumours. Solitary macular retinoblastoma should raise an index of suspicion for likely germline mutation and multifocal disease. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)
